I am going to do a Girl Scout project about rocks. I want to find a local store that I can buy some rocks for the girls to crack open and see inside. Does anyone know where I can get these??? If you know a good project that would work too!
Are you looking for unopened geodes? Those are the rocks with crystals inside. I'm sure the little touristy traps in N. Georgia and N.Carolina would have them, but I'm not so sure about closer to town. A better bet would be to order some online. They'll probably be cheaper that way.

Also, my Girl Scout troup used to take trips to the Gem & Mineral Show at the Cobb County Civic Center. I think it comes once a year. You could get all sorts of neat things like polished rocks and super cool mineral samples. Used to be twice a year and now it's held right before Thanksgiving. Maybe you could store it away for future use.

Thanks ladies. I love the show idea. I will save that for the future. Kate loves rocks and she wants to show the kids her rock collection and introduce them to her love of rocks. We have a rock polisher, but that takes weeks to do. I have to do it on Wednesday so no time for on-line ordering. I may have the kids make a mosaic from rocks we find around the church. I may go to petsmart and get some rocks and have them make their own art project. More ideas the better. I feel drained of creativity!
You might consider visiting one of those places that sells landscaping rocks. She could pick up lots of "samples" of different types of rock - especially granite (the state rock of Georgia).

I should have started this earlier then I could have tried to get your DH to talk to the kids. A speaker would be great!!! I will remember this next time! I looked at both websites and didn't see anything. I may have to give them a call.

i asked my husband and he said he would be happy to talk to the kids the next time, if it was in the evenings (work is insane right now)! currently he is a tunnel inspector (200 feet underground) and his best friend (and dad of an adorable 18 month old girl) is a geologist on the project as well - he said maybe the two of them could come up with a cool presentation.

That is so awesome. Tell him thanks!!! I have to tell you I cringed a bit when you said 200 feet underground. Yikes I am so claustrophobic. That would freak me out!

Love this! When I was a little girl I wanted to be a gemologist when I grew up
My dad used to take me to this show!
They sell tons of that kind of stuff on Amazon.

Sometimes you can find them in teacher supply shops. But you will pay a premium that way.
