Babies: 0 - 3 Months

DD always breaks out of her swaddle

I swear, unless DH does it EXTREMELY tight (which I am unable to do), her left arm always ends up out of it.  I feel like this gets her up and it makes me crazy.  I feel like I spend half the day trying to perfect her swaddle.

Does anyone else keep their newborn in a swaddle for much of the day?  Other than when she's up (and content), that girl is in a swaddle.  The minute she starts to fuss, it's swaddling time.  Not sure if that's a good thing or not.

Re: DD always breaks out of her swaddle

  • We switched to the SwaddleMe blankets since our little guy breaks out easily from swaddles too.  He can also get his little hands up through the SwaddleMe but it takes him a while :)

  • When Seth was your baby's age, he was in a swaddle much of the day, too.  Unless he was just content and hanging out in our arms, or eating, he was swaddled.  He was swaddled for all naps, and at night.  We still swaddle at night.

I don't see what you're doing as a problem at all.  Swaddling helps babies feel safe.  You give her time to wiggle around when she's happy, and that's good, and swaddle her when she is fussy, which is also good.  Seems like she's getting what she needs :)

  • We started out using a Swaddleme which DS would break out of with no problem.  A friend loaned me her son's Miracle blanket which worked like a dream (or a miracle :)  I didn't want to buy it because it was almost $40 but it worked so well that when #2 comes along, this will be my first purchase.

  • We have a swaddler from kiddopotomus.

She still gets out of it every now and then, but it keeps her much better than just blanket swaddling does.

We only swaddle her at night. It's become part of her bedtime routine. And if she gets her arms out, we usually don't worry about it, and just leave her be. She hates having her arms bound.
  • have you tried bigger blankets? walmart carries some in their george brand. that's what we use.

and i LOVE the swaddle, but i would try not to go overboard. i have a 6 mo old who has to be swaddled for naps and bedtime still. : /

  • Our DS loves to move his arms and we couldn't keep even the sleep sack wrap around him.  So we just stopped swaddling him and we use just the wearable blankets instead.  He seems to love the new freedom!
