DD became a big sister on Feb.16th. Jackson is a heafty boy to say the least. He came 2 weeks early weighing 8 lbs. 3 oz. and by his 1 month visit was 10 lbs. 15 oz.! When he was born I noticed he had close to know butt (just figured he was taking after his dad lol), and had what seemed to be an unusually long crack. I just assumes maybe it just seemed that way since he doesn't really have any butt cheeks. A week or two later though I noticed his butt crack almost ends, then starts again and in that 2nd area there are two deep close holes. He was doing fine other then some colic that seemed to improve with some chiropractic sessions and diary being taken out of my diet so I didn't make a big deal about it. At his month check up Yesterday I brought it up first thing to the pedi. he immediately called over to the hospital and told them " He had an infant with a deep sacral dimple, who's older sister had corrective surgery for IA". They gave us orders for an MRI hopefully with no sedatives although I highly doubt i'll be able to get him to sleep through the procedure, he is very fussy and alert.
The first thing that poped into my head when i heard Sacral dimple
was tethered cord(a possible feature of DD's condition, has not been ruled out yet but she has no signs of it so we have yet to put her through and MRI). Im still numb with just the idea of it being
something and having another child go through surgery. I am being a
horrible mom and have not even looked into it other then the hand our
the pedi. gave us. By the time Makenna was 4 days old I had diagnosed
her condition, found her support group, done hours of research and knew
more then the "specialist" we saw.
Does anyone know anything about sacral dimples, or have another
child in addition to your SN child with an issue? Im almost a little mad
that he may have something wrong. Everyone kept saying DD's IA was
more then likely just a "fluke" and it wouldn't happen again. Although
it didn't happen again I feel like we have another "butt" problem to
deal with. Although the little I have read makes me feel much better about the chances of it being nothing im still just a little worried about it. After having one child born with an unexpected issue, it kind of took away my ability to just shrug things off as "it wont happen to me".
Thanks for letting me vent and any info or suggestions would be great.

My DD1 has a sacral dimple. They let us know right away at the hospital when she was born, but it's "closed" -- meaning it's shallow with no holes -- so several docs confirmed that everything was fine.
They can be a sign of something wrong with the spine, like spina bifida. But most of them are just a fluke and LO is still perfectly healthy. My DD1 has no physical issues, although she is autistic. A friend had a son not long before we had DD1, he had a sacral dimple as well, and also was just fine and healthy.
I hope it turns out to be nothing for your little guy!

I have it, and DS has it -- sacral dimple. He's been tested for tethered cord since that is associated with VACTERL as I'm sure you're aware.
He is negative. It can't hurt to have the diagnostics done.
I don't want to frighten you, but I JUST learned today that despite NEGATIVE early testing (birth to 3 months) a child can still develop tethered cord. I have several families in my EA/TEF support group who are going through diagnostics and surgery at 8-10 years of age. And, perhaps "develop tethered cord" isn't the correct use of words. It's possible that despite early testing, the condition wasn't detected early on.
It's definitely something to search for now, and something to look for later as well.
Sometimes it can't be visualized well on the MRI until they have grown a little bit, to show the 'pulling' of it, I guess is also one way to describe it. I have a huge article on it because Peyton's neurosurgeon is supposedly a tethered cord specialist, although I think the only thing he specialized in is bad bed manners.
Anyways, Both Peyton & Morgan have them. They did think P had a tethered spinal cord, due to that but also other issues. She had all 5 of the normal signs a toddler would have. I'm sorry the pedi flipped out like that..I'm sure it made you 10x worse than you would have been.
As for having a baby after a SN child..M was born on 2/22/11, early-ish after my awful second pregnancy. They said the chances of having placental problems again was slim to none...go figure!
But, she already has tort, diagnosed a month earlier than Peyton's and that was the first thing P had..and it just kept going from there. The PT recognized that she wasn't moving her right side..her ankle issues, etc. So, I kinda plastered a smile on my face and said ok, tort, pt, I got this. But, in the back of my mind I'm scared to Fing death that M has something wrong with her too.
Let us know how it goes..and i'm not sure I would be comfortable putting bitty baby (albeit giant..lol) under anesthesia at that age..is it doable to wait until 6 months? I mean, his tethered cord shouldn't really hinder him this early anyway, from what I know about it, IF he had it.

I don't know anything about sacral dimples. I just wanted to say that I'm so sorry you are going through this & I hope you find some answers soon!! I definitely agree that having one born with some unexpected issue keeps you from truly being able to be like, oh sure this one's fine. It stripped me of my ability to just relax/have faith everything is ok and must have implanted a super worrying device in my brain.
