2nd Trimester

getting bigger; stretching skin?

I'm 25 weeks and have been started getting "big" over the last few weeks.

My next appt is next Friday, and I'm not in any sort of serious pain, but I'm wondering what other people experienced as their bellies started getting bigger. The last couple of weeks it's felt as though the skin around my belly button might be tearing in pieces or that my belly button is trying to completely rupture. It's not REALLY painful, just seems as though I can literally feel my skin stretching/tearing. Especially after eating or doing a lot of physical activity.

I read up a little bit on herniated umbilicals and it seems like that may be what's going on. I have an "outtie" until I was 8, so perhaps the muscle lining there is just thin to begin with? I'm going to ask at my next appt but wanted to know if anyone else went through this type of feeling and if so, did anything help relieve it? (A belly band/support band?)

Also....what joyful pains do I have to look forward to if I'm not even as big as I will get and feel like this?? :)

  • I'm not 25 wks yet but since 19-20 weeks my belly goes through growth spurs i swear each week. I also know that feeling you're talking about like u said especially after a big meal I can feel my poor skin holding on for dear life. I am very small framed and never had a belly so my skin is not used to this. I actually have been itching a whole LOT and it sux so I just changed my belly cream to see if it helps. I bought the mama bee burt's bee one since it is more oil based. We'll see, but although it sux it is always a reminder of this little sweetie getting bigger and bigger Smile

  • I have been getting what I call "growth spurts" frequently, and it can be a bit uncomfortable/painful. The worst is definitely the stretching skin feeling. Mine is worst in the area right above my belly button. I asked my doc about this last time, and she said it's just part of the territory and not much can be done about it. She did mention that I could get a prescription for a pregnancy belt, and I'm going to take her up on it later this week.

  • I don't know about the painful feeling of stretching skin, but I definitely had really dry/itchy skin when my belly started to pop. So, I just make sure to lotion up really well every day. This fixed that uncomfortable feeling for me. Now, if I could just get my abs to not hurt so much after dinner...  :0)
