DH and I are not ready for TTC#2, yet, but it is time for my yearly. Next month actually. I am going to a new OBGYN because my hospital for DD's birth was horrible, my OB with her is now under investigation for SIX lawsuits, and the hospital does not allow VBACs. Anyway I have only seen this new doctor once. I was told he is pro-VBAC, but he told me that by the time I want to have another baby the hospital might not allow it because many hospitals aren't anymore?!?!
I just went in the last time for an infection/BC/and just to get switched as soon as possible. They have not requested my records as of yet. The earliest we will be TTC is fall 2012, but is there anything I should discuss with him? Should I go ahead and have the records sent? I am also overweight, so I don't know if that needs to be addressed. I just want all of this to turn out well; I want to be as prepared as possible.
**Background for C/S: Toxemia diagnosed at 35 weeks (80lbs weight gain), failed induction (and screwed up) instead of hospitalized bedrest at 36w4-5d. C/S 36w5days. Sister also had Toxemia with DS#1.
Re: Questions for *new* OB? Not TTC
How scary about your former OB!! Glad you're looking for another provider and birthing place for sure!
For questions, I really liked the list provided in the Doula Guide to Birth by Ananda Lowe and Rachel Zimmerman
If it were me, I would hold off on getting records sent to the new OB until you're certain he's on board with you and supportive of VBAC. I would also find out various hospitals' policies on VBAC in your area (within an hour's drive), and then I'd find a pro-VBAC provider affiliated with the most VBAC-friendly hospital. Being that you have so much time to spare, I'd use it to interview providers/hospitals to find the best birth team and location possible. Your local ICAN chapter could be very helpful in this mission, so you could also find out their meeting information by contacting the chapter leader from the ICAN directory. GL and HTH!

I live in a very rural area. There are only a few hospitals that will possibly allow them I'm not sure I trust two because of lack of experience with/not knowing people who have used them. The one in the closest "big" town that will allow them is the one where this doctor delivers. I did talk to the local ICAN leader, but she said the chapter isn't very active. She said she'd try to get a meeting together, but hasn't yet. I would like to talk to midwives, but don't really know where to get info. I don't even know if there is a birthing center nearby. I would be scared to do a birthing center, though, just in case there is an emergency.
How do I go about getting info on midwives?
Sorry for the very late reply!
In looking for midwives, check out the Finding Your Tribe on www.mothering.com in their community forum. There are usually great replies regarding midwives and natural birth providers (if I remember correctly there may even be a VBAC group there as well).
You can also check with CAPPA and DONA. These are doula certification groups, and I would think a local doula to your area could easily provide you with care provider info.
As for birthing center vs. hospital... I drove almost 45 minutes (with no traffic) to my hosptial-based midwife practice. I've heard of women choosing to even go out of state to get the birth experience they're looking for.
You can also try to contact someone at NARM (the North American Registry of Midwives www.narm.org GL and HTH!
