ultra sound at 6 weeks?

Did anyone have their first appointment at 6 weeks and have an ultra-sound?  I called today to schedule my first appointment (I am only 4 weeks now) and they scheduled the appointment for when I am 6 weeks.  They said that I should definitely bring the hubby because we would get to hear the heartbeat with the ultrasound that would be done.  I am confused, and nervous, because I thought that ultra sounds are not that early.  After some research, I discovered that an ultrasound that early would have to be a transvaginal ultrasound and I don't know how I feel about that!  I am kind of a squimish person when it comes to doctors and just the idea of that intimidates me.   Anyone have any opinions/thought?

Re: ultra sound at 6 weeks?

  • It's common to have an ultrasound at the first appointment for dating purposes. The transvaginal ultrasound is like a giant dildo... yes it's uncomfortable, but try to concentrate on your baby when it happens. You might spot afterward and so bring a pantyliner in case they don't give you one.

  • I have had many a date w/ the dildo cam. It's really not that bad. Heads up, they will probably ask you to insert the wand yourself, but really. It's NBD.

They have to do it that way because they won't be able to see anything w/ a traditional ab. u/s at this early stage.

  • I can't believe they told you you would see a hb at this point. You may, but usually it forms within week 6 and it is so little it can be hard to hear. I'd take your H for support so these people don't freak you out if you don't see the HB.

  • My OB typically does an u/s at 8 weeks.  I declined it this pregnancy.  It is for dating purposes, but I was confident of my dates and felt that I could wait a few weeks to see the baby at the 12 week NT scan.  My OB said it was completely optional and he was fine with waiting to do an u/s as long as I didn't have any spotting or signs of complications.  U/S cause me a lot of anxiety though.  I think they are important later in pregnancy, but I don't think the early ones do much to reassure me or improve my prenatal care.

  • I'm really nervous about this. My first appt is Thursday and I'm afraid I will have an u/s. With my son my first u/s was at 10 weeks and I just had to drink a ton of water for them to see the baby.. this will be different and I've never had one before so I'm nervous. I may decline.. not sure yet.

  • I am so nervous too!  Can you let me know what you decide and what your doctor says?  I am really curious if my doctor is just ultrasound happy or if this is something that I should be doing.  This is my first pregnancy and I just have no idea what I am supposed to be doing.  I am also really worried that if I don't hear a heartbeat during the ultrasound that I will freak out.  Even though I know that there is a good possibility of not hearing one.   I am a super worrier!

Let me know what you decide and good luck on Thursday!

  • As weird as it sounds, I prefer internal ultrasounds in the first trimester. You get much better images, and can see things much more clearly. I had an ultrasound at 6 weeks with this baby because of my history. For the most part, women usually don't get one until 8-10 weeks. Early ultrasounds are hit and miss. There might be a heartbeat visible, but if there isn't, I wouldn't freak out.

.... I think that's a really smart and balanced perspective.  This is my first, so I am totally nervous and the ultrasound my OB wants to do next week @ six weeks is making me nervous~

  • I totally respect those that forgo an early u/s or want to wait - like the PP mentioned, if you've had no problems, and it's just for dating purposes, I'm sure you could wait on it.

I did have an early u/s last week (we think it was my 4th/5th week) and couldn't really see anything.  I go in tomorrow for my second and because I had some not-normal bleeding early on, it's important to me to do it.  If you do decide to have it, I will say that honestly it's not a big deal.  It's just a wand in your vagina.  It's slightly uncomfortable but probably more so psychologically if you're squeamish.  In the grand scheme of "things being done to your vagina during pregnancy," I think it's pretty tame.

  • I have an ultra sound every week starting at 3 weeks. I personally love having a lot of ultra sound s because I get to see my baby. I saw the heart beat at my 5 week appointment and it was amazing. We couldnt hear it till the 6th week though. If your insurance pays for it why not. Also the vaginal kind isn't bad at all.

  • I am 7 weeks and went in yesterday for an internal sonogram. All they could see was the yolk sac. Should I be worried? Maybe I am really 6 or 5 weeks along? I am a little nervous that something might be wrong. Help!

You probably aren't as far along as you thought. Do you know when you ovulated?

Yes, my last cycle started on Feb. 6th and only lasted a couple of days.

  • You may or may not see a HB at 6 weeks. f you do, that's great, if you don't, don't worry.  It doesn't necessarily mean anything.  In that case they will just have you come back a few days to a week later to do it again.  Ultrasounds are a perfectly safe, non-invasive procedure, so don't worry too much.  The ultrasound is not going to harm you or the baby in any way.  Just relax and good luck with your appointment!! :)

  • Yeah, the transvaginal ultrasound wand is skinny not huge! lol No discomfort here Smile
  • All that sounds perfectly normal.. my first appt with DS was scheduled for 6wks, that way its certain to see something and yes, see the beating heart.. don't remember if we heard it, but def saw it... it will look like a little kidney bean!  The u/s will be just fine.. you wont even notice it, they'll lube it up and you'll be so excited to see the monitor, it should'nt even bother you!

  • I had my first U/S at 6w5d and it was great.  I got to see and hear the heartbeat.  The vaginal wand was not painful at all and I did not have to insert it myself.  It's nothing to worry about.

  • The dildo cam is very skinny (about as big around as a quarter) and not all that uncomfortable. You'll be fine! As for the h/b, I went in at 5w4d and couldn't see the h/b yet. Went the next week at 6w4d and saw the h/b then. Good luck!

  • Had my first ultrasound at 5 weeks 1 day. The trans-vaginal is no weirder than a vaginal exam by your doc. It's in and out. You will be fine.
  • I had one on Monday, I was @ 6 weeks.  I don't know if it's standard for my dr to do them so early, but I went in because I've been spotting.  She did a transvaginal.  I don't get all the hoopla- I don't find it uncomfortable at all.  I've had a regular u/s (I have a fibroid), and IMO that's WAY worse because of all the water you need to drink beforehand... you're basically concentrating on not letting your bladder explode...  But I digress!  She couldn't see the heartbeat yet, so don't worry if it isn't visible yet, 6 weeks is still early.

You didn't answer the question. We don't want to know when your LMP was, we want to know what day you ovulated. Were you temping? If you don't know exactly when you ovulated (it has nothing to do with LMP) then you could have ovulated late, meaning that you aren't as far along as you think.

No, i was not temping. And I dunno when or what day I ovulated. So I could be 1 week behind than I thought. I will find out how far along I am at my next internal sonogram appointment on April 11th :-)
