I had one during my pregnancy and I wanted to crawl into a corner and just cry. It was horrible. The worst part was burping, yawning, coughing, or anything that put pressure in the ear. The medicine could not work fast enough.
I get them frequently. I usually end up with at least 5-6 a year. I get them from wind blowing around my ear when I run and no matter what I wear over my ears it doesn't help. I have a standing Rx with my doctor for ear drops.
If you have a heating pad put it next to your ear or lay on it for as long as you can. The heat should help with the swelling.

Re: I don't know how babies do it...
I had one a few years ago and thought I was going to die.
Maybe they aren't as bad on kids?
Hope you feel better soon!
