December 2010 Moms

naked baby sleeping!

Ok, she's not really naked, but we're going cold turkey from the swaddle tonight to see how it goes. After I got a picture from her child care provider today showing her sleeping on her side, swaddle-free, I figured I'd try it at home.
Well, it went ok for her nap when we got home, as you can see...

So I thought we'd try it for bedtime. Well, she wasn't a fan of the side this time, but managed to fall asleep on her back, cuddling with her "Jesus Giraffe". (Jesus Giraffe is the stuffed giraffe my BIL & SIL got her for her baptism, it has a scripture verse on it.) I gave her that so she'd have something to hold on to, otherwise she just kept waving around her hands and stealing her own binky.

Anyone else breaking free of the swaddle cold turkey? I'm nervous, but hope it works!

Re: naked baby sleeping!

  • Good luck!! I have had to break out the escape proof swaddle this week to get decent sleep. DD starts daycare tomorrow and they said they can get her to nap in the crib. I'm curious to see how it works.

  • She's so cute! I just went into L's room and found her on her side. She seems to really like it that way. We still swaddle her lower half (no arms, but from the waist down). I'm scared not to.... Let us know how it goes!

  • I'm thinking of trying it next week, because A keeps pulling his arms out this week and it doesn't seem to be waking him up immediately.  I'd like to see how you do!

  • We were using the escape proof swaddle and swaddlemes for a few weeks and then went cold turkey because he would fight against the fabric when going to sleep. The first couple nights it took him a little longer to fall asleep... 20-30 min instead of less than 10 because he would startle or flail around but then he got used to being free and we haven't used the swaddle in 3-4 weeks now and he sleeps a 7 hour stretch then a 3 hour stretch at night. Good luck!

I don't know how, but we always got the babies to sleep in the cribs at child care. They act different there than at home for some reason. I forgot to mention that not only did she nap on her side without a swaddle, she took 2 naps like this! A 1 hour nap and a 3 hour nap! I only got 30 minutes out of her this evening, but so far she's been sleeping for 45 minutes, let's hope it keeps up!

She can't roll from her back to her side or belly yet, so unless I put her on her side, she won't sleep that way. I tried it tonight and she would just arch her back, so I just let her lay on her back. So far, so good!

We have been using the escape proof swaddle for about 2 months! I just switched to the Summer SwaddleMe's a couple of weeks ago, because she was busting out of the ep swaddle. Now, she can get out of those too. She'll start stirring around 4:30am and then I'm up every 45-60 minutes reswaddling her. She sleeps through it, as does DH, but not me, so I'm less than thrilled. I hope she can go cold turkey!

  • I tried one arm out earlier last week and she was up every hour.  Were going to wait another month before we try that again!

  • We went cold turkey this past weekend (in connection with sleep training) and I was shocked that it was not an issue at all. If anything, she seems happier without it! I was scared out of my mind that she'd wake up over and over, but nope. Hope it works well for you, too!

  • Good luck! We swaddle to get Riis to bed, but loosen it up and take her arms out after she is fast asleep. It seems to work for us :)
  • aww, what a cute pic! We're still swaddling over here, so not sure how we'll go about stopping, but GL to you guys!
