Babies: 6 - 9 Months

DD has food allergies...FML

I usually don't do FML posts, but seriously, this sucks.

I have severe food allergies & I'm allergic to all legumes (peanuts, soy, peas, chickpeas, beans, etc).  So, per the pedi's recommendation, we have waited to give her some of these foods...until tonight, when we tried green beans.

It started out fine & she actually liked them.  However, after  about an ounce, she started gagging & projectile vomited (Exorcist style) & was gasping for breath.

It.Was.TERRIFYING.

Thankfully after the vomitting stopped, she was fine.  But obviously, I freaked & called the pedi, who confirmed it was probably a food allergy.  I'm so frustrated by this.  I didn't develop my allergies until I was 25, so I never knew what it was like to grow up with them.  But I have had 2 life-threatening attacks since I found out...and I can't even imagine what it would be like if I have to worry about my baby like that.

Not too much of a point to this post, just looking for alittle support I guess.  I'm just nervous b/c if she does have the legume allergy (like this is presenting as) that means it would be treenuts, soy, and peanuts...just like me.  Hopefully it is something that she will outgrow & maybe it won't even an issue in a few months...fingers crossed!

  • Poor thing! Hopefully she outgrows it I <think> they usually do when they present this young.  I also developed food allergies in my 20's, but mine are just to certain fruits (bing cherries are the worst) and caffeine.  S already has the milk protein intolerance and gets tummy aches from most solids.  Gah! Needless to say we haven't moved much past bananas!

  • How scary, thankfully she was ok after. Is there any possibility she'll outgrow them?

  • I'm so sorry, DH has potentially fatal allergies and I know how scary seeing a reaction can be. Fingers crossed your DD outgrows them.

  • She'll most likely outgrow it. I was allergic to milk protein, bananas, and eggs growing up. I could have dairy and eggs if they were baked (think cakes), but not scrambled or anything. I couldn't have ice cream or cheese pizza or anything. It really sucked, but I learned to deal with it. The good thing is that now they have a lot of foods that are made for kids with allergies. I'd check Whole Foods and health stores in your area. I outgrew my allergy when I entered high school, but I know that's really old. Most kids outgrow it at a younger age. Now they can even do allergy tests to check and see if she's still allergic and you don't have to risk an allergic reaction. I already know Natalie has inherited my milk protein and banana allergy. It sucks. I'm sorry you have to deal with this!

I am so sorry.  How scary!

We are also dealing with food allergies (milk, soy, wheat, gluten).  We had a GI appointment today and he suggested we try and reintroduce gluten today.  It was a big fat fail.  We?ve been dealing with the repercussions all evening.

It makes me sad to think about what she will miss out on while growing up.

  • So sorry LMK! My fingers are crossed that in a matter of time she does outgrow it. One positive way to look at  it is at least you have experience with it and are already knowledgable when it comes to what she should and shouldn't eat. Keep your head up.

  • I'm so sorry that happened to your baby. How awful:( However, I have a friend with two boys who were allergic to everything under the sun and once they turned 2 and 3, they outgrew everything and were able to eat all the foods they were once allergic to (ie: milk, eggs, nuts, etc). Good luck! I will keep my fingers crossed for you.
