Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

anyone else's LO have a ton of trouble falling asleep?

DD has been like an insomniac for the past month or more.  We put her down around 6:45 and she's clearly tired - rubbing her eyes, yawning, etc, but then she takes up to an hour (or more) to actually fall asleep!

We do the same routine every night and make sure she has plenty of quiet cuddle time before we put her in her crib.  We'd be fine if she fell asleep in our arms, but most of the time she won't so we put her down awake.  We did Ferber when she was about 5 months and she's been going down awake more often than not for 7-8 months now.  She is transitioning from 2 to 1 naps so I'm wondering if that might be part of the issue.  Tonight she was exhausted so we put her down at 6:00 and as of 7:30 she's still awake, rolling around, crying every now and then.

Sorry this got really long, but I'd LOVE to hear any advice you might have!  I feel so bad for DD and just want to help her be able to fall asleep again.

Re: anyone else's LO have a ton of trouble falling asleep?

  • Crazy that you wrote this now. I'm listening to my 20 month old cry himself to sleep now. He's been an awesome, awesome sleeper and usually goes down without a peep (we, too, did some sleep training at about 6 months). Lately he's been a little bear to put down. Just crazy. Crying the moment we head for his room and not stopping until he's worn himself down and passed out.

I have no advice for you, but would love to hear what others have to day. TIA!

  • When LO is having trouble falling asleep, I do a few things.  I try and make sure he isn't hungry or thirsty.  The last few times, I went in and offered him a bottle, and he gulped it down, and then laid down and went to sleep as soon as I put him back down.  Other times, I will just cuddle with him a bit (just hold him and put his head on my shoulder, and then cover him with his blanket) - this I try not to do the next day so I won't start a habit.  I try really, really hard to not leave his room - he pops up like a jack in the box no matter how tired he is if we leave his room.

  • I am going through a similar thing right now. I don't know what the problem is! DD has never been a good sleeper, but we've had a pretty good stretch of regular naps and going to bed pretty easily. Not the last few days. All I can tell is that she is overtired and therefore has trouble falling asleep. Thankfully, tonight she did go down easily...but that might have been because she only took a 45 minute nap today. I had to rock her longer tonight and I sang to her - the only thing that got her to relax. Prior to my singing, she was literally slapping my chest - not hard or mean, just kind of fidgety. I have heard that sometimes LO of this age have trouble with sleep because they are learning so much and just so excited and stimulated? I don't know! :) Not much advice, just wanted to say that I am having a simiar issue. The last three nights it took her an hour to fall asleep and that was only after I went in there a few times to get her to settle down. I hope everyone's LOs start sleeping well again!
