Drainage from ear with tubes..

hello everyone!

My LO had tubes put in around 4 months ago and just recently started to have drainage.. The left ear is brown crust in the ear and just this morning the right ear started draining, started out clear and now since she has had a nap it has a water down yellow color and is dripping out of her ear.. I have put cotton in her ear and it acts like a sponge.. there is little to no smell coming from the ear..  I have called the ENT but he is n surgery today..  does this sound like an infection or is the drainage normal?   Thanks ladies.

  • Sounds like an EI to me...they'll probably advise drops.  You can call the pedi about it if the ENT can't get back to you timely.  Not sure if they'd want to see your LO.

DD2 has had two EIs since tubes and one cleared up after just drops.  The other one we used drops and the pedi prescribed oral antibiotic because she also had a suspected case of strep.

  • When DD had the drainage she also had an ear infection- so not sure if that's always the case, but she had SO much crud coming out I could not beleive it. If it's an infection then the tube is doing it's job, removing the fluid. I would check with the ENT, but as long as it wasn't blood we were told not to worry.

  • They are doing their job by draining the gunk out of there. If you have drops, use them. I would just call the pedi and not the ENT, since it's been awhile since your LO had the surgery. They may even just call a prescription into the pharm for you for drops. Our pedi usually likes to give the drops a try for about a week or so before going on antibiotics.

  • Ped gave me this rule of thumb.  If drainage is clear or even slightly tinged but watery, it's probably ok.  Anything darker, thicker, waxier, is an ear infection.  So far that's held up.  It's weird because it's not like the old ear infections with the pain, fever, etc.  Most of the time you wouldn't even know DS has anything going on.
  • DS had this and the doctor assured me on several occasions that it was normal.  His was clear, yellow, brown, green, thick, thin, everything.  The doctor said the tubes are supposed to let the stuff drain out, so they are doing their job. I finally took him in when it had been two weeks of constant drainage, cough, runny nose, and his breathing became labored.  They finally gave me antibiotics which cleared up their ears.  But the doctor didn't have a problem with it, just the breathing problem.

  • We were just at our ENT for DD's follow up from getting tubes. Dr.  told me that if there is an infection there will be drainage. He gave us 4 refills of drops and said to start the drops at the first sign of drainage and to call him. Definately get ahold of the ent or the pedi
