Do you plan to use a booster seat until 4'9''?

I thought this had always been the recommendation, but with all the talk about the new recommendations I'm interested.

So who plans to follow the recommendations to use a booster seat until 4'9"?

  • What is the "new" recommendation?

It's the law in my state - for good reason - so I plan to follow it, unless the new recommendation you state shows why it would be safer to do otherwise???

  • This makes me laugh because it means my MIL should be in a booster.

  • Absolutely. I will also keep my kids extended RF as well. Car accidents happen far too often and you cant be too safe.

  • Honestly I have no idea. If LO gets my height she could 13 or 14 before she passes the 4'9 mark. I cant imagine driving her up to Jr. High making her get out of a booster seat! Huh?

I guess if she is still 13 and under 4'9 we will have to see.

  • my son is 11 and just reached 4'9

    I didn't have him in a booster

  • I thought it was like 4'9",80 lbs or 8 years old whichever came first...maybe I am completely wrong. I know I will be taking as many precautions as possible to keep LO safe.

  • I thought it was 80 pounds AND 8 years (not or). I guess we should all research the real laws before our LOs get that size and age.
  • In Michigan, we have the 8 years or 4'8" law. My son will be 8 this year and he is still in a booster with a back on it that has a 5 point harness. My four year old is in the same booster but hers is pink and his is black. They will both be in that booster until the max out the weight for it, no matter how old or tall they are. Neither one of them complain and since it is the only thing they have ever known, it isn't a problem.

Besides, there was once when he had to get picked up from school and my MIL didnt have his booster (emergency situation) and he was ticked off because he couldn't see out the window as well without his booster seat.

Bingo- Christmas gift idea with state law. :) Bonus points if it's a Barbie booster.

  • I am all for carseat safety, and DS is still rear-facing.  However, I didn't reach 4'9" until 9th grade, so we will have to assess the situation in the future.  If DS/DD are 8 or 9 when they reach 4'9", then sure they'll be in a booster!  But if they're approaching their teens and still not tall enough, I'm not sure I can force them to do that.
