2nd Trimester

What are you doing about heartburn?

I don't have terrible heartburn at 24 weeks right now- not so bad I need a prescription for something, but enough that it's a bother. I read somewhere that products that contain aluminum (i.e. tums, maalox, etc.) should be avoided.  Has anyone else heard of this? What is your most successful remedy?

  • I use tums and maalox and both were recommended by my overly cautious OBGYN.  Love maalox in the mint flavor.  I have never read that they should be avoided, just the opposite in fact.

  • I have never heard that...my Dr told me to take Tums and that is what I have done in the past.  So far it hasn't hit in this pregnancy.

  • A teaspoon of white vinegar. Its so nasty but it works.. And if it doesnt, take another teaspoon.

  • I hear ya, my heartburn is horrible. It wakes me up at night. I sleep with my head raised which seems to help a little bit. I also take tums and malox as needed. I am going to the doctor today and I am going to ask for something else b/c they are not cutting it.

    good luck!

  • I, too have an overly protective doc. She advises Tums and it works perfectly! Also, sleep with a maternity pillow - it definitely helps!

  • Dr said tums only but I also use apple cider vinegar when it's really bad. I take a capful.

  • Tums, tums, and more tums.

  • Strawberry milk when I was pregnant with DD. My doc recommended tums but they didn't do crap.

I have GERD (acid reflux). Luckily I've gone the first 5.5 months of this pregnancy without much discomfort and avoided taking medication as long as possible. But now it is getting to me. The OB said it is safe to take my Nexium Rx and tums.

  • When I asked the doc what to take, he recommended tums.
  • A glass of milk works wonders for heartbburn.

  • I take Zantac twice a day, per my doctor's instructions. I may have to try the vinegar tip, though, because I have flare-ups in between my Zantac doses.

  • Luckily this pregnancy it hasn't hit yet and I'm hoping it doesn't because it's awful!  BUT, last time I found the chewable tums worked the best and also I would just chug milk by the gallons (the only time I ever drink milk, usually I hate it!)  Milk really helped!!!

  • my midwife recommend vegetable enzymes for heartburn. she said it is 100% safe.  they don't always do the trick for me though.  but i was told i can't take any regular heartburn med, like tums.  i wonder why if you are all saying your docs said its fine.
