March 2011 Moms

what did you bring

So I just got the call about being induced tomorrow morning at 6:15!  This is our first LO and honestly I'm scared shitless. I hope I packed all the right things for tomorrow (spare clothes... hopefully they'll fit me, LO birth clothes, receiving blanket). They said I can bring dvds, laptops and everything but I'm not too sure if that's a good idea. From tuesday til thursday or friday is when they're keeping me. Anyone have any suggestions or have some insight?

Re: what did you bring

  • Congrats! It is almost time to meet your little one! The things I used the most when I was in the hospital were nursing tanks, sweat pants, one outfit for LO (his going home outfit), my cell phone, my DH brought his computer, and my own pillows! Hope this helps! I for sure over packed as the hospital provides everything you need!

  • I brought my own toiletries, pillows, computer, cell phone, 2 going home outfits for DS (1 newborn, 1 0-3 months) and a couple different outfits for me. I ended up wearing sweatpants and a t-shirt home with my slippers. With the c-section I needed something loose fitting and my feet were so swollen from all the fluids that there was no way my shoes would fit. If you are nursing, nursing bras or tanks are a must too. I brought a book and magazine, but didn't really look at them at all.

  • - Going home outfit for your LO

    - Going home outfit for you (I brought additional clothes but ended up wearing a hospital gown the whole time... I was bleeding a lot and didn't feel like getting blood on my clothes, so I held off on changing until we were ready to leave the hospital)

    - Stuff to keep you and your DH entertained- games, magazines, laptop, DVDs (the whole first day of my induction was soo boring. Nothing was really happening, so DH and I watched TV and played board games most of the day. If your induction ends up being long, you might want to have some stuff to keep you occupied).

    - Cell phone, camera, etc.

    - Your own pillows... the hospital pillows were awful!

    - Toiletries

  • Good luck; I am so jealous!

Labor-delivery:  Pillow, still camera, papers, cell phone...labor stuff you may plan to use, hubby usually want snack so he can pack it, ipod

Post:  night gown, flipflops for shower, slippers, panties that fit but you don't mind throwing away, magazines, pen for feeding log, nursing bra or really tight bra if not nursing, nail trimmers for baby or mittens

Leaving: Clothes for you (5 month usually fit easily) clothes for LO, weather gear as needed.

  • I totally agree with the pillows!!!! more than one too for you and your SO. I also took socks, slippers and flip flops maybe overkill but the floors were yucky to me and so was the shower. Hair bands/head bands for during and after labor in case you can't shower right away. Also, I brought more than one outfit for LO because you never know how big they are going to be and one of my outfits would have been too small. Good luck!!!!

  • Bring room spray, that's one thing I'm adding to my "to pack list" for the next baby!  haha.

I lived in my PJ pants after the first day, the first day it's best to stay in the hospital gown because they're always in there checking out things.  Nursing tanks with a zip up to cover up for guests, nursing pads.

I was provided with mesh underwear and pads - even though I brought both I preferred the hospitals so I won't bring them next time.  I brought my slide on shoes as well.  You'll probably still look about 6 months pregnant after you have the LO so don't plan on wearing your pre pregnancy clothing home.  I'm still in maternity clothes! haha.

I had books and magazines but I was so caught up in the day (I too was induced) that I didn't really look at them.  DH and family kept me company.  Bring your own towel if you want one that is bigger and softer than what they will give you at the hospital.

  • The only things I used that I brought were my pillow, LO's boppy, and my laptop. (And toothbrush, tooth paste, shower gel, etc) They let me put on my own clothes the next day and I just wore what I wore in for my induction. Everything else I ended up not needing or using.

  • Bring FOOD!! My induction lasted 21 hours and 3 meals a day from the cafeteria weren't even close to enough. This was especially true after the delivery and I was instructed to feed every 2 hours.

DH had to run out and buy crackers, some cookies, a breakfast burrito one day. I wasn't even a junk foodie, but using all that energy left me starving during our stay!

Oh, and clothes, ipod and toiletries, etc. The video camera was fun to use every hour of induction too because I had basically forgot everything I/we went through during those 21 hours. Good luck!

  • I was induced last Monday, and LO didn't come until Wednesday afternoon.  Even with all of that time, I wouldn't have watched DVD's.  I did have a laptop and I used that once or twice, so that might be worth it.

I brought spare clothes for myself and then never changed into them.  I tore during delivery, so someone was always in checking on my stitches.  Or pushing on my uterus to check my bleeding.  It was easier to stay in a gown (plus, with all of the blood, it was easier to just change the pad underneath me if I bled through the pad/undies than worry about bleeding through to my pants).

I don't know if you plan on FF or BF, but if you choose to use formula, they'll give you some there.  Aaron wasn't drinking an entire bottle (2 ounces), so half of it went to waste as it can't be used past an hour of it being opened, and they can't reuse it once LO starts.  It may be a good idea to bring a few bottles with you so you can pour what you need into the bottle and have them refrigerate the rest for the next feeding.

Our prenatal class gave me a list that included hard candy/suckers, snacks for DH, mouthwash, and chapstick.  I had 1 sucker out of boredom, and used the mouthwash once.

Don't be scared!  You'll do just fine.

  • I'm going tomorrow night for induction and am scared as well! I'm bringing a relaxation CD, CAMERA, cell phone, laptop, a change of clothing, DVD's, suckers, snacks for hubby & myself, makeup (for all those pictures!!!), toiletries, slippers, PJ's, 2 outfits for baby, blanket, don't forget your carseat!!!!  I probably overpacked, but I'd rather be ready than not....worst case is you don't use all of your stuff....

    GOOD LUCK!

    :)
