S/O Are your home scales different from your OB's?

The weight gain post got me to thinking.  It drives me nuts that my scales are so different from my OB's, which I'm sure my OB's scales are more accurate, unfortunately!

I went on a major diet/eating better/exercise plan Feb. of last year.  I pretty much weighed every other day because that was the only way I could seem to keep my weight in check, and the loss or non-loss always caused me to work harder at exercising/eating right.  I always weighed on the Wii, in just panties, in the morning before my bath, so I could get the most accurate weight change possible.  My scales showed 149 the day I got pregnant.  They now show 157.

I know having clothes on adds weight, etc., but at 11.1 weeks their scales showed 159.  Now they show, at 18 weeks, I weigh 163.  It's just weird how off my scales are from the OB's.

 Anyone else this way?

  • Yes ours don't match up either, I actually think my home one is more accurate tho bc it's digital and my midwife uses a standard old school one.

  • Yes, I think my OB's scale is not as accurate b/c it is an old scale that probably needs to be calibrated. My scale is digital, when I get weighed at the OB it says that I am heavier by like 5 lbs. I trust mine over hers, or maybe that just makes me feel better, LOL...

  • Mine is actually pretty similar. Weight fluctuates, so it's hard to tell exactly, but it's at least pretty close.

  • I see about a 3lbs difference between the doc's scale and ours at home. I keep two numbers in my head but make sure to weigh myself at home every other day. I am not supposed to gain very much weight with this pregnancy so I use it just to keep myself on track.

  • Mine is also different from the OB's but the weight loss/gain amount is the same so I go with my scale b/c the numbers are lowerSmile

  • Mine always seems to be 3-4 lbs heavier than my ob's, but the nurse at my ob's office just happened to mention that she knows that their scale is 3lbs lighter than it's suppose to be. I never seem to be the same at dr.s offices than I am at home though.
  • This morning I weighed 168.8.. Before I left he house I was 170.2 at my OB office it was 172..So its close. But I wore a light dress and took off my shoes this time ;)

But yes, my office is different so I keep track at home.

  • Only because I am always butt naked when I weigh myself at home :). I should be over it by now but old habits die hard.
  • Yes, my doctor's scale is exactly 1-2 pounds heavier. To be sure I keep track of my weight in between visits to monitor how many pounds I've gained, I weigh myself in the clothes I'll be wearing at the doctor's office right before I go so it will be exactly the same.

Look at the positive side...after we have our babies and come home to weigh on the scale for the first time, it will always reflect that we weigh 1-2 pounds less!

  • I have a digital scale at home and the OBs office is usually 2-3 lbs heavier than at home. I track both weights.
  • I experience exactly what you're talking about. I complain every time I go in for an appointment because there's usually a 10lb discrepency. The nurse who saw me last week recalibrated their scale and my weight was more on par with what I weighed at home (I was 1lb over, but that was right after lunch, so it made sense). If you ask them to, they'll set the scale back to 0 before you step on it and then your weight should match better with what you're seeing at home.

  • Different scales will always vary. I don't think you should worry that much about it.

  • Yes, they are different. In the end the OB is only interested in the relative gain, unless you have obvious health/weight issues.

My OB uses these old scales too and the Nurse that weighes me got my weight wrong, she obviously couldn't add up and the last time I was there I cought it and was like  ''could you check again, I think you got that wrong'' she added 10 lbs that wan't there... I dont really trust her too much, so I always look and make sure she gets it right.  I weight 2 lbs more on the OBs scales than my scales at home.  HAs been the same each time I go.

  • I'm a huge fan of my OB's scale.  I'm usually at least 5 pounds lighter on it than on my home scale.  The difference is consistent and they do get it calibrated regularly.

  • That's so funny you posted this....I was wondering the same thing today..

I just had my 1st prenatal apt and that scale at the office was NOT kind.

At home it shows I've only gained 4 pounds, but at the Dr.office, I've gained 8.5.

     I left feeling so fat!

  • At home I weigh myself when I get up, by the time I get to my Dr. office I have already had breakfast and a bunch of water. If it is in the afternoon after I have had 60-70oz of water plus numerous meals it is much higher.

  • I see a 2-5lb differnce which I think is about the norm depending on what you are wearing when

  • I'm 3 lbs lighter on my ob's scale.  I prefer that one!  :)
