Recommend Your Travel System?

This question may be more applicable to second time moms, but I'll take any advice.  Here goes...

I have a small 4 door volvo, and I'm hoping to get a travel system where the carseat fits easily into the car right onto the already mounted base AND the stroller part fits well in the trunk... I registered for this one:

https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3776330&fromRegistryNumber=46726015&product_skn=851593 (graco deluxe stylus)

But now I'm having second thoughts.  Some of the reviews said that it didn't fit in shopping carts well and it's hard to open and close.  I want to be mobile with my baby, as I love going for walks in the park now with the dog and I plan on taking the baby to the mall (without the dog!) as well as the park (with the dog... she's small and doesn't pull too much)!  I don't RUN though, so no need for a jogger.

I would love for you to recommend a travel system that they carry in Babies R Us that you think would suit my needs.  Price isn't really an issue, as we'll just buy it ourselves if we need to (then again, I've seen some travel systems that are REALLY expensive... No need for us to buy one that costs $800, either!)   I registered for a Britax Roundabout 55 for later on, but I need something for rear facing for the first year or two from what I understand.

I should add that I'll be doing dropoff at daycare and DH will be doing pickup, so it has to be something where we can easily leave the carrier at daycare AND where we can buy an additional base.

Thanks in advance!  I really feel clueless about this sort of thing.

Re: Recommend Your Travel System?

  • We haven't made a definite decision yet, but we've had the Chicco Cortina travel system recommended to us by two different sets of friends.  Several people have told us the stroller/travel system is the one thing that you DON'T want to mess with the cheaper versions, and Chicco seems like a good "middle ground" - about $300 for the travel system, so it's high quality but not outrageous.  We tested one at the store this weekend and it was pretty bulky, but definitely sturdy and well-made.

  • personally I am a HUGE fan of snap n gos for the infant seat so you can learn what your stroller needs really are and what you want in your stroller. Different strollers have different +s and -s.  I LOVE LOVE LOVE my City mini double.  BUT my needs in a stroller may be different from your needs.

  • I would suggest instead of going with a travel system, instead find a infant car seat you love and a stroller you also love that can be used as a travel system. (The Baby Jogger City series, BOB and a few others do this.) Or, just getting a snap n go stroller.

Generally the travel system strollers aren't ranked very highly and are heavy/bulky.

With DD we have the Baby Jogger City Elite and used it with a car seat attachment bar when she was little so that we could use it as a travel system. My sister, who is also pregnant right now, is planning to do the same thing with the Baby Jogger City Mini.

For a carseat we had the Graco Snugride 32 and didn't have any complaints. It was a good carseat that lasted a long time.

Thiiiiiiis! The Baby Jogger City Mini is outstanding if you're low on space, and the Elite will fit the bill if you need something a tad bigger/all-terrain tires. Both can use a car-seat adapter bar, and both have THE EASIEST fold on the market. I plan on using a City Mini with a Chicco Keyfit.

  • I thought about going with the travel system but then found the Graco Literider Stroller.  It accepts all Graco infant car seats just like the travel systems, but weighs less and takes up less room.  It's also sold at BRU so you can still register for it there.  We chose the Pippin theme and also registered for the matching car seat so that it will be more like a travel system.
