Does your baby cry during tummy time?

My DD hates tummy time. She is fine for a minute or so and then gets frustrated and starts to cry. It breaks my heart seeing her so frustrated but I know that she has to gain the muscle to be able to do it. I usually let her fuss for as long as I can before I finally cant bear it and put her on her back again...

Is this normal? Its a catch 22..she is so frustrated because she isnt strong enough, but she needs to do it to be able to get strong. Any advice?

  • Yep, DD does. I read that it's just like when you work out a new muscle and it hurts for a while then every time you work it out again it gets less and less painful. They're using muscles they don't normally use so it'll be painful or uncomfortable at first but the more tummy time they have the easier it will get fr them.

  • Have you tried doing TT with her on your chest? If you lay flat on your back and put her on you, that will count. Also, putting a mirror by DS helped him a ton, he will look at himself and then I can get him to follow the mirror.
  • Are you doing tummy time on a playmat or on you?  I lay down on the couch or in bed and put DS on my chest- he will stay like that forEVER and even enjoys it.  If I put him on his mat, he fusses after about 5 minutes and if I don't flip him over it leads to a true meltdown.

  • Yes, early on she hated it.  Now that she has better neck control she doesn't mind it much, but it's still not her favorite.  I hated hearing her so miserable too!  Just get down on her level, talk to her, pat her back, and maybe do short periods throughout the day.

  • Yes.  He hates it so much, he started rolling over at 2 weeks.  And sometimes he can't roll over, but he spends the whole time trying to (or rotating himself around in a circle).  I don't know if I want him to get much stronger yet!
  • DD was the same way.  She is just now starting to enjoy it for longer than a few minutes.  We did the on-us chest TT for awhile since she didn't enjoy the mat/floor TT.  To be honest, I didn't do it every day like they say just because I hated to see her fuss like that.  Now she is getting better at it.
  • This question is kind of related... how long/how often do you do tummy time with DC?  I feel I'm not doing it enough with DD.  We usually do it 2-3 times a day for 5-10 minutes or so.  What's everyone else doing?
