2nd Trimester

Prepping down there

So, this may be a stupid silly question but I have no one to ask but you guys.  This might be a little too much for some people too.

I've heard that when it's time for delivery, they will shave you down there if needed.  First, is this true?  Second, if it is, and you've had a baby, did you do it yourself before going in?  If it's true, I would think I would be more comfortable doing it then having someone else do it.

Thanks.

Re: Prepping down there

  • I did it myself.  They used to groom you down there and give you an enema back years ago but the majority of places do not do either anymore.

  • I've never given birth before, but I *think* they only shave you if you need a c-section.  That being said I do plan on doing some 'maintenance' before hand, if I have to show my nether regions to a bunch of strangers I want it to at least look nice lol.

  • Haha!  I always shave it all off anyways, just easier than trying to maintain some sort of strip!  So I guess I wouldn't know, but from my friends I have not heard that they shave you, i think that's kind of old school.

  • I am very well groomed and shaved down there, but after being in labor for 2 days and not having a razor on me, yes they had to take out the electric shaver to prep me for my c-section...

  • Unless you have some medical reason to be shaved (c-section is the only reason I can think of) they won't shave you. It's not necessary.

  • Good question for your hospital tour and your OB actually.  Different places have different policies.  When I went in for DD's delivery no one asked me about it - but I also keep things pretty tidy down there anyway so it's possible they didn't ask b/c I was already shaved.

And no I don't do it myself, I have DH do it since I can't see or reach.  We use electric beard trimmers to do the job and he used a razor and shave oil on me a day before my scheduled induction also just to make sure everything was clean and would stay that way until I was home and able to do it myself again.

    Thanks ladies!

  • I think back in the day they did that but not anymore. I just tend to it like I normally do. I don't do anything extra special for the big day...LOL.
  • I am planning a nice brazilian wax about 1 week prior to my due date...and lets hope I don't need to make an emergency run due to early baby! Ha!

  • While I was in my OB rotation in nursing school, I saw quite a few births and I never saw the doctor shave any of my patients.

I am planning on doing a little "grooming" in preparation...but will I be able to even reach down there when I am about to pop?  And I am not going to enlist anyone else to do it...

  • good question cos I never really thought of that. But to be honest, with everything going on I think that will be the last thing on my mind personally. I would say I would do it myself first but it?s not so easy when you?re that big right? And considering I only have a shower and no bath it?s even harder.

I?ll be more concerned by finding a dr that speaks english personally cos I live in a different country but don?t speak their language :-p

  • I've still been getting brazilian waxes so I'm hoping the timing is good for the birth.
  • So this may be a dumb question, but why do they need to shave your vag if you are having a c-section?

  • omg I haven't felt like waxing at ALL the whole pregnancy, so haven't...  I've avoided being too overgrown by just trimming, do you think that's okay??
  • First - I have no idea, because I went in already perfectly shaved... And that answers the second part. I would always shave before my appointments and by the end they are every week (I even went to my 40 weeks appt!) so I was pretty much shaved the entire time. The morning I went in labor I took a long shower and shaved one more time. I was 40w5d, had DS the next day (after midnight).

  • I have had a c section and there was no need to shave down there....I don't know what its like for other women, but my pubic hair stops about atleast 1/2 inch lower than where they cut me open.  I was well groomed for my section, but even if it was wild down there, the incision was higher than my pubic hair....

But does anyone groom even for OB appointments?

They don't shave your vag, they prep the surgical site only.  So they only shave the hair at and above your pubic bone.

  • Ask your doctor, some will and some won't. I plan on keeping myself trimmed so I don't think it'll be an issue.

Too funny, but I'm totally planning on the same thing even though everyone keeps saying it's not going to matter!

  • Okay, ladies...I had my mind set on this also.  I've had a brazilian once before and it wasn't anything horrible.  I've yet to go back while pregnant but I've heard that the increased sensitivity down there makes it horribly painful.  Does anyone have any info or would anyone be able to give me any insight?  I'm still shaving away like I normally do but I'll have to say that it's getting a bit difficult to reach it and get it as "neat" and I usually keep it with a razor.  A waxing would be perfect but I don't want it to bring tears to my eyes.  Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
