2nd Trimester

can't sleep comfortably?

Hi Ladies!

I am 17 weeks today with my first baby, and for the past two weeks or so, I just toss and turn all night long.  Nothing is comfortable.  I have tried using a body pillow, an array of other pillows wedged here and there, but nothing is helping.  I used to be a tummy sleeper and now obviously I have to sleep on my side. I am ready to throw out my mattress but really we can't afford a new one.  I am thinking about a memory foam mattress topper (but they aren't cheap either) I would really welcome any ideas or suggestions.  Its enough to have to wake up twice a night to pee, I want to at least rest the rest of the night!

  • I would love some advice as well.  I haven't been sleeping through the night for all of my pregnancy and it is getting worse.  I have tried pillows wedged here and there and they are not comfortable to me either.  I actually feel awkward with them.  Does anyone have the pillow thing down pat and can tell me where to be wedging them?  Or when you roll over doesn't it wake you up?  I have a Tempur-Pedic mattress and they are supposed to be good and I never really had troubles before so I don't think it is the mattress.  I think it is just that I was a belly sleeper and now every time I change positions I wake up and cannot fall back to sleep for a long time.  I know why I couldn't fall back to sleep last night, today I have my anatomy scan and am hoping for good / healthy baby news and to find out if I am having a boy or a girl.  Oh the anticipation!

    Good luck to all!

Oh ya and can you tell me how to do the tickers?  They always just show up as the code for me.  I think they are so cute and want to use them.

  • You can get the tickers on the bump, and then you copy the code into your signature.  It wasn't easy for me to find it either, but there is a place in your profile for editing you avatar & signature and thats where you add it in.

I am thinking about buying a memory foam mattress toper since the pillow just aren't working for me.

  • I was in that situation a few weeks ago. I'd say that I was a stomach/back sleeper. I could never sleep any other way pre-pregnancy. But the further along, the more uncomfortable I got. I was restless like you for a while, trying to be creative with my pillow arrangements which did help me. Now, I guess I've morphed into a side sleeper. I feel most comfortable this way now. Maybe your body will adapt, too.

  • Buy a snoogle!!!  It has been a life saver for me!!  I took it to my Mom's this weekend and even used it in the car on the trip home!!!  I love my snoogs!!  :D  The cheapest I have seen them is Burlington...

  • I have the same problem- I purchased a pregnancy pillow which helps for a while , but I toss and turn all night- I also try stretching my legs and toes at night and soemtimes it helps as well.  I think it is just the way it is!
  • I am almost 20 weeks and experienced difficulty sleeping comfortably since week 14.  Like you, I tried everything...extra pillows, a body pillow, etc., but nothing seemed to work!  We already had a memory foam mattress topper and it didn't help any.  My DH and I ended up biting the bullet and purchasing a new mattress since ours was over 9 years old anyway.

We bought a mattress and foundation directly from Tempurpedic on promotion for 3 years interest free, so we could spread out the expense.  I must say that, in addition to sleeping much better, my back pain that existed pre-pregnancy, is also gone.  My DH is also very pleased because he is sleeping much better as well.  What a difference a good mattress will make!

  • I have no advice either, but I havent slept well since around 18-20 weeks when I couldnt sleep on my stomach anymore... sleeping on my side is so hard and so uncomfortable... I just try to take naps on weekends to help on the sleep I missed out on all week long.

  • i can't say i sleep great, but here is what is working for me right now...

i use a snoogle body pillow with my regular pillow over the top (head area) of the snoogle.  the bottom of my snoogle goes between my knees.  for my belly support, i use a throw blanket tucked under my belly and that blanket also goes under my chin.

when my hips need a break from side sleeping, i coil my snoogle up under my head and elevate the upper half of my body so i can sleep on my back.  sometimes the coiled snoogle is comfortable for side sleeping as well.  i just tuck my throw blanket under my belly and between my knees.

the amount of work it takes to get comfortable is unreal!

hope you are able to sneak in some restful sleep soon!!!!

  • Here's another pregnancy pillow you can try. Leachco (who makes the snoogle) makes this one too. I like it because you can switch sides without having to adjust the pillow:
