Tricare.... DELIVERY

My first delivery with my first son i wasnt on tricare yet my husband wasnt in the services yet so it was covered by another insurance i was on and now im trying to conceive and i was wondering if anybody here is on tricare standard and has gotten a bill for their delivery and how much it costs cause i know we pay 15% of that.... so i dont know if i should switch to prime... we leave in 4 months to a new station (dont know where yet) so not sure if ill b pregnant yet but just wondering if i should stay on standard if it would be a LOT of money once the bill came ....

Re: Tricare.... DELIVERY

  • From what I understand, with Tricare Standard all of your maternity care, including delivery, is covered under Global Maternity(?).  You'll have to pay so much per night in the hospital, and it's a very small amount all things considered, but everything else from the delivery should be covered.  I think.  Hopefully someone who is, or has been, pregnant on Standard can answer you better.
  • Maternity care is covered (I'm high risk with tons of extra appts/tests and have paid nothing at all my entire pregnancy). The hospital stay is about $17/day. Non-maternity related, Standard is a $300 deductible and $1000 max cap for the billing year (runs 1 Oct-1 Oct) per family, so those caps cover for you and your first child if both of you switch to Standard.

  • I had a c-section on Standard. It only cost us $63. That was for the room. The bill was over $17,000. It was well worth the $63 to pick my own dr & hospital.

    Good luck.

  • I delivered in January and the bill was $25. The only prenatal thing I paid for was the copay for my first appt where they confirmed the pregnancy. 1ht
  • This a good question.  Dh unit it to deploy 2 months before EDD.  So I will fall into this catagory. im going to be watching this.

This exactly.  I had a C-section at an amazing hospital and stayed 4 days, with 2 babies.  All of my care for all 9mo (with emergency visits for pre-term labor scares, tons of extra blood work, extra ultrasounds, etc) was covered 100%.  (I think I got a couple random bills in there for lab work, but it would be a bill for like $5.)  At the end of our hospital stay, I got a bill in the mail for $65!  SO worth it!  I would do it that way again in a heartbeat!

Just make sure they confirm the pregnancy with a simple urine or blood test and wait for a later appointment for a dating ultrasound and any other tests, pelvic exam, etc.  Otherwise you will have to pay a co-pay for all services rendered on the day of the confirmation appointment.  I was unaware of this and my co-pay was close to $300.

  • wow thanks guys! that makes me feel soooooo much better! thought i would have to be paying a few hundred dollars!! i know my first pregnancy i had a lot of complications ( i wasnt on tricare yet) and my bills kept coming and coming and coming i was in and out of the hopsital all the time and each bill was never lower than $100 it was so stressful! but that puts my mind at ease! THANKS!!! and thats very odd that no copay for the drs visit so i dont have to pay ANYTHING to see my obgyn? all my ultrasounds will be free?? cause i know i get bills for my bloodwork at hospitals and i go to a specialist for my migraines (a neuoligist) so isnt a obgyn considered a specialist ?
  • whoa

but thats what they always do i thought. well i remembered my first pregnancy i knew i was pregnant i took a pregnancy test it was postitive so i went in and they did a ultrasound to confirm it my first visit.... i thought thats just how it works so your saying not to do that? or to go in and have them check my urine before they do the ultra sound? and were all your other ultrasounds covered throughout your pregnancy??? what other tests did you have done that day?

Seriously? I've been debating switching to Standard before I get pregnant so I have more control over my experience, and I think you just cinched it for me.

Did you have any pre-preggers check-ups? Was that the normal cost share/deductible cost (I'm assuming it was, if you had it)?
