2nd Trimester

Family not liking the name...:)

We have decided months ago that our baby girl will be named, Sophie Grace...I personally don't know anyone with the name Sophie...When I told my G-ma, she honestly thought I was joking...lol...And My dad, who is opinionated anyways, thinks its a very childish name that wont grow with her...I will not be changing her name to suit other people's opinions, but do you think it's such a horrible name???

  • You love it, use it. Your baby. I like more unique names myself but as stated..Love it, use it!

  • I do not think it is horrible at all. The only thing would be the popularity of it. If you wanted to stop the "nickname or little girl's name" comments, you could do sophia, but at the end of the day, it is your choice! Many people had things to say about my DD Elle but I loved it and ignored the haters :)

  • it's a little too popular/common for my liking, but i still think it's cute. and i wouldn't go changing it because a couple of family members didn't like it. no way! keep it & they'll deal.
  • I think it's beautiful, it's just too trendy for my style. But, like PPs said, it's your name and you should use it if you want to! Not everyone likes the boy/girl names we picked out but we like them and that's what counts.

  • I like it! Who cares what anyone else thinks? I posted earlier about names I liked, and then deleted my post because the first two responses both didnt like our names. Its doesnt matter what ANYONE else thinks, its a personal decison, and if you have reasons, meanings or nothing but a thought that it is a good idea, its totally up to you! My mom immediatley told us she "HATED" the nickname for our girl name, DONT CARE! Its just a matter of what I like...

  • Sophie is a sweet name. It's not horrible at all! Everybody has an opinion, yours matters the most ;-)

  • If you like it and you think the baby will grow well with it, I don't see a problem with it. I personally love the name, but not the spelling - I think "Sophie" is a little rough around the edges and would go or "Sofie" more. But I'm weird.

    Yep, this.

Sophie a very cute name, a little trendy for my tastes but not horrible at all. I will say, while it was very harsh, I can see why your dad said "childish" though - when I hear Sophie I think "cute little girl" but not "business woman" or anything like that. If it were me, I would name her Sophia and call her Sophie. That gives her the option of a more "grown-up" name if she needs/wants it in the future. JMO, feel free to ignore it :)

Same here.  We decided this past weekend that we are not sharing until she arrives.

  • I have a niece named Sophie.  I got a lot of flack from some in my family for naming my son Shannon but you know what?  I love the name so I didn't care what anyone else thought.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • It's a very cute name. Don't worry about her growing into the name. That name is so common for babies right now, that 25 years from now it will be a common adult name. Stick out tongue

  • That was my thought on the matter...Obviously the adult names will change in a few decades...

  • we also fear my parents won't like the names we want.  but we aren't finding out the gender so we aren't saying the names until the baby arrives.  family will just have to deal.  my parents were given a hard time when they named me, but i love my name. if you feel good about it, your baby will too.

  • I like that name. We never told anyone our name for son until he was born so we wouldn't have to listen to annoying opinions.
  • I think it's a perfectly lovely name!

  • Beautiful name.

You should have kept it to yourself.  Wink

  • I think that is such a sweet name!  When it comes to names there is always going to be someone that doesn't like it, or remembers someone with that name that did something bad, or was strange.  The most important thing is that you love it!  I don't think I am going to let anyone in on the names of the babies because of that reason, but that might change down the road.

  • It is cute! Do what you want!!! We decided to tell everyone the name with our DS and got horrible comments back...we named him Ari anyway and now everyone is fine with it and we get tons of compliments...

  • How is that a bad name? That's weird that your gma thought you were joking.

My ILs have never been real fans of DH and I's "non-traditional" names, but they never say anything.

  • This is exactly why we're not sharing the name until the baby is born. Frankly, I don't care what my family thinks! They had their chance to name their babies, now it's our turn.

And I like the name you have picked out. Grace is really popular these days, but if you like it, go for it!

  • I think the name is really cute.
  • I understand how you feel - none of our family or friends like our babies name either; Elodie Ann. Everyone says like "Melody without the M??? hmmm, interesting" However, it is something my husband and I both like and she can go by Elle later on.

Anyway, I love the name of your baby. It is very pretty!

  • My family hates our names for a girl, and they did hate DS2 name. I wish I would have kept it private cuz I now get emails or texts of new name suggestions. Really doesn't matter to me, it's like pp said they had their chance to name their baby how would they have felt?!
  • I like the name, although it's a tad too popular right now. I know million Sophia/Sophie. Anyway, if you like it then that's the only thing that matters. Opinionated people is exactly why DH and I do not share names until the baby is born. They have less to say once it's a fact.
