2nd Trimester

Job termination 3 months early-are you kiddin me???!!

So I'm a private nanny for a very high maintenance family. I took the job because DH and I were in a financial bind, and it was available and I was right for it. So I've been working over a year at 60 hours a week, sometimes more. I stay late when they need me to, have come in super early when they've been in a tight spot and needed me, and have busted my a$$ to help them out. I've potty trained their three year old boy and have raised the baby boy since it was a newborn. When I got pregnant, the first three months were horrible as far as exhaustion went, because of my hours and the kind of work-chasing toddlers and babies can wear you out! Well I made one mistake (the ONLY mistake my boss has ever said I made) and it wasn't even a big one. I forgot to fill out a chart due to some morning sickness and a severe migraine. It was a chart that listed the foods they ate and dirty diapers. That was all. But she jumped all over me telling me I was lazy and my work had slipped badly. then I started to feel really good about the fourth month of pregnancy, and everything was ok. I told them I would be quitting in June-I was so ready to quit before then, but not financially able to yet. We still need the money. Last week they told me they had found another nanny to take my place in June, and I would train her this week. Then I show up to work this morning and they tell me they decided against that nanny and have decided to go with another one, and I train her tomorrow and Wednesday-and then I'm done working. Are you for real??????? No notice or anything and we are not financially where we want to be for when the baby comes!!!! We wanted to move to a house so we were saving for that, but we are so totally screwed now! What's more we have been saving for forever to go on an anniversary/babymoon trip this weekend. DH and I have everything set up to go spend four days camping and fishing on a lake. We've both worked long and hard this past year and we wanted a stress free vacation where we could chill. Not anymore!!!!! Sorry this is long-I am stressing and freaking out now though!!!!

  • I know that sucks for you, but keep in mind that it is not easy to find a good nanny so they more then likely didnt want to wait until the last minute to start looking.  Sorry you can't take your trip.

  • I would say "no you can train her" what is two extra days of pay when in the end you are still out of work.  I would not do all the work for them.

  • That is awful! I'm so sorry! Do you have any kind of a written contract with them? If so you might comb through it to see if there is anything to protect you, at least financially a little. I hope things work out for you!

ditto this!  As long as they don't owe you for any days of work you've already done, I'd say good bye now.  That's b.s. treatment....if they had found a great new nanny then they should have tried to work out a compromise to at least keep you a little longer and made the new one wait a little.

  • Sorry that this is happening to you, but I sort of feel like you kind of set yourself up by telling them you were quitting.  You should have given them maybe a month notice to hire and train someone verses a few months notice.

I'm the type of person who doesn't like waiting until the last minute for "big things" and hiring and training a new nanny would be a "big thing".  Honestly, I don't disagree with your boss for hiring someone new now so she won't have to deal with it later.  Kind of grimy?  Yes, but also easier for her.

DITTO!  Screw her!  She doesn't sound like someone that would give you a good recommendation anyways.  So, let her sweat it out and see really how hard you've worked for her and then maybe she'll have some appreciation.

Yeah, it sounds great to be all "SCREW HER!" until you need that reference for another job.  Don't forget that some employers like to contact your most recent place of employment.  You also have to be able to explain why/how you left the job.

This exactly!  Don't burn your bridges, OP.  It sounds like they probably would give you a good recommendation since the Dad said the only mistake you ever made was forgetting the chart one time.  The family sounds very type A, and because of that they probably wanted to get on the ball with their hiring decision.  I don't blame them for looking for somebody already.  It does stink that your new house plans might be put on hold, but as a perpetual renter (and probably a renter for a long long long time into the future because DH is military and we just never live anywhere long enough to make it worth it to purchase a home) I can only say that there are worse things in life.  I hope you still get to enjoy your trip with your husband.  One day in the future, this stressful week will just be a blip on the radar of your past and won't matter that much in the long run.

  • That REALLY sucks! I can't believe they did that! Most families who hire nanny's and keep them for a long period of time become close with them since they are the ones caring for their kids! Heartless.... I'm sorry that happened to you, but you know... everything happens for a reason. There is a reason somewhere for this to happen right now. You and your DH need to sit down and recalculate your finances and see where you stand.

    I agree.

You  may need a reference down the road.

  • Don't they legally have to give you 2 weeks notice (or 2 weeks pay)? I'm sorry you have to deal with this, it would be very stressful and that is the last thing you need to deal with right now. Hang in there!

  • I feel you. I got fired from a job I had been at for 2 1/2 yrs. Their excuse was a no call no show for days that I had talked to my supervisor about and had taken the rest of the week off. Unemployment denied me too because I didn't call in every day and "how did I know I'd need the rest of the week?" I am fighting it for multiple reasons. The supervisor took me off the schedule and replaced my shifts with someone else. Who calls in to a shift that they aren't scheduled? Also, my supervisor went out on maternity leave last August and told me that if she came back and I was pregnant she'd fire me. Jokingly I assumed but surprise surprise, I'm unemployed at home now. I had made up my mind to be a SAHM after our baby was born but wanted to save that money for the thing we were going to purchase prior to the babies arrival. I hope all works out for you hun. Just remember that times will get tough and as long as YOU have the strength and willpower to get through it, you will!

  • Unless you actually signed a contract that states anything about termination on either ends- its fair game to do whatever. I really don't feel they should be making you train your replacement when they aren't allowing you to keep working until you had told them.

As much as it sucks, everything happens for a reason. You really don't want to burn the bridge- you may need them for a reference someday. My advice, smile and nod... train the chick, maybe not so good, and go on your merry way!

  • That really bites. I feel your pain. My charter school bosses decided that I asked too many questions about changes going on so they cut me loose March 1st instead of letting me finish out the year. No money, no insurance, no warning....I don't understand how people with any sort of conscious can do that to other people, especially pregnant ones who clearly aren't going to be able to find other work very easily. :-(  Good luck with everything!
  • Wow, they sound like real gems. I'm sorry.

I agree with this...I probably wouldnt have said anything until closer to the date. It does suck, though, that she did this to you. I mean, she could have at least kept you on part time or something. Either way, you never know if you'll need her for something (anything...reference, rehire, whatever), so definitely do not burn your bridges. I'd keep it nice and tell her how amazing it was to work with her family and how sad I am to go, especially 3 months early. I might even turn on the water works...lol...you have enough hormones to do it!
