D.C. Area Babies

An Introduction

Hi, I am new to this board and I thought I'd introduce myself.

I'm 28 yrs old, live in NOVA, and I teach psychology classes at a for-profit college. My husband and I just got pregnant for the first time and my EDD is 11/18/2011. I'm going in for my first appointment on Friday, at Physicians and Midwives in Alexandria. Does anyone else have experience seeing them?

I'm waiting to have my first Dr.'s appointment before letting my friends and family know I'm pregnant. I'm getting antsy and really want to tell them!

Anyone else in the DC area in their first trimester? How long do people typically wait to let friends/family/work colleagues know?

Nice to "meet" you!

Re: An Introduction

  • congrats on your pregnancy! i'm sure you'll find the time goes by quickly. H&H9M!

tell people now if you want! i think a lot of people wait until they are out of the first trimester when the chance of miscarriage is significantly reduced. with both of our pregnancies, we told our family and close friends right away. i figured if something didn't go well, i didn't want that to be the first my family and friends heard (and going through it alone was not an option for me). we did not tell work until 12 weeks with #1 and 7 weeks with #2 (i was showing, so there was no hiding it!).

i've heard mixed reviews on P&M. i think most of the ladies on this board have had good experiences there, but i have two good friends who had horrible experiences. i have a midwife and an OB whom I love, but based on my two friends' experiences, i would not go there if i needed either type of provider.

  • Welcome!

I told my parents, ILs, and a couple of close friends about my pregnancy during the first trimester, but I waited until 12 weeks to announce it to everyone. It's a personal decision and you should do what you feel comfortable with.

we waited til the results of our NT Scan both time to tell everyone (13-14weeks)

  • Thanks! I think you're right about wanting some family to know just in case something does not go well. I suppose then they'll be there to support me in that situation.

I'm definitely going to wait a little longer to tell work, though.

What were the horrible experiences your friends went through at P&M? I guess I've had mixed experiences just going there for my annual appointment, so I'm a little nervous about who I might wind up with for all these prenatal visits. Do you have other providers you recommend?

  • Congratulations and welcome to the board.  We told people long before 12 weeks, but it is entirely personal preference.  I also told work early, but I had serious morning sickness and it was very obvious.

one friend had a MW from another clinic and needed parallel care for a special circumstance. she met with a NP and an OB at P&M and left in tears after they berated her for coming in the first place. they did not believe that she was actually experiencing what she reported (she later learned the cause after visiting another OBs office), and were extremely rude to her. friend #2 had a complete pregnancy with P&M. after a short labor, full of standard interventions, she was lied to about the need for a c/s (she later requested full records) and the staples in her incision were poorly done, resulting in multiple infections, multiple hospital stays and a home nurse. there are many other details that i won't go into in a public forum, but this was enough that i would never recommend P&M.

i'm not aware of any other practice in this area that has MWs with hospital privileges. if you are considering an out-of-hospital birth, there was a thread last week with recommendations for both CNMs and CPMs for both birth center and home birth.
