Why can't people be more understanding? VENT

Baby Hawaii made a scary entrance into the world and spent time in the NICU.  We finally got to go home with clear instructions to not bring the baby into public places, keep kids away from him (measles is an issue here again) and anyone that is/was sick/cold, etc.

So H's sister is now p^ssed because her kids, who aren't vaccinated btw, want to come to see the baby and can't.  She thinks I'm being ridiculous because her kids aren't sick and "they'll wash their hands."

Then a friend, who's 6mo old is sick right now still wanted to come over and see the baby.  I said no--and while she sounded understanding, I could tell she thought I was being silly.

I might be overprotective or whatever, but its still H and my call to make.  Maybe in a week or so things will be better, but right now we're not taking any chances.  Watching your child hooked up to all sorts of wires, machines, etc is really hard and I'm going to do everything I can to not put him in that situation again.

  • I don't blame you at all!  I'm glad you're home now. Hope he's doing well!  The friends/fam will get over it.

  • I don't think you're being overprotective.  You're following your doctors orders.  If anything I think your family/friends are being unreasonable.  I'm glad you're home and I hope your LO gets stronger quickly.  In the meantime, don't feel the least bit uncomfortable saying no to visitors.  Tell them you'll Skype them if they want to see the baby

  • You're doing the right thing, and they can think you're the silliest person ever, but since you and DH are the only ones who get to make the decisions, their opinions don't matter.

  • I don't think you're being ridiculous at all, I would be doing the exact same thing and would not feel an ounce of guilt about it. It's your baby and your decision and they can just deal.

  • I agree with you a 100%!  If they don't understand then forget them!  I've been limiting visitors a bit too, not because lo is sick but because it is still cold and flu season here and I don't want to risk it.  I haven't taken her out of the house yet unless i've had too.  I will get her out but i'm waiting for it to warm up and she is so little I would hate if she got sick.  So keep doin what your doin momma only you know what is best for your lo!!!

  • You're following doctor's orders.  What's wrong with that?  I was really strict with visitors as well, and tough sh!t if they don't like it.  Our LO was in the NICU as well, so I completely understand.

  • I agree with you putting your foot down. My DD was a NICU baby and I was very careful the first few months - especially with unvaccinated kids (we live on a military post with people coming and going from all over the world, so there is that much more risk of random diseases and I wasn't taking chances that some neighbor's kid with no vaccines might have very legitimately been exposed to measles or small pox or whooping cough until I knew my DD had had a few rounds of those vaccines herself). It's hard to be super vigilant when others don't have the experience you've had, but better safe (and an annoyed SIL) than sorry! Has your pedi mentioned Synergist shots?
  • You are absolutely doing the right thing. It just isn't worth the risk.

  • You're right. People are so naive about how easily germs spread.
  • You are a good mom and you are doing what is best for your child.  That is all that matters.
