Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Lets play a game of "Would you judge?"

So, yesterday I went to Home Goods with my mom. It was packed, like seriously a mad house. I see this woman carrying around her baby, a very small teeny baby. This kid couldn't have been more than a week old, if not a preemie, he was really tiny. (are you getting he was small?) That alone got a side eye. BUT then, I noticed she was carrying him facing forward, and this poor baby's head is flopping all over the place!

I couldn't believe she was carrying her son like that, like he was a 6 month old.

So.. would you have judged her?

Re: Lets play a game of "Would you judge?"

  • Honestly, probably. Sometimes you can't help but to judge.

Edit: But not that she had her baby out, I don't think that's a big deal at all. Purely for the unsupported head issue.

  • No. I try to give people the benefit of the doubt. Maybe it was her first kid and she doesn't know any better than to carry forward facing. As for it being a small baby, lots of people take their new babies out immediately. If my ds wasn't a preemie I'm sure I would have had him out right away. Being stuck in the house all day sucks.

A few weeks ago I was at my nephew's b-day party at Chuck E Cheese, with my DD (who is 3). My DH and I decided that CEC was no place for a baby so our DS and DH stayed home. DS is 6 months old. I was flaberghasted to see there was a 12 DAY old baby there.  The baby was so tiny too- no reason for that baby to be there (they weren't a part of any of the parties there- it was just a family out at CEC.)

And even with that- There were some games I wouldn't let DD play with because of how touchy you had to be and I wouldn't let her up in the 'playplace' area either. Plus we washed hands at least 3 times while there and used sanitizer a few times too.

I might be over the top but I don't need my babies getting sick. (oh, and once home DD went straight in for a bath)

  • I wouldn't have judged her having the baby out of he house but I would've judged the forward facing carrier with lack of neck control.

  • Babies that small (1) don't need to be out in public on a weekend afternoon ESPECIALLY if it's as cold there as it was here and (2) they need head support.

    So yes, I would judge.

Even when Lucas was a newborn I struggled with whether or not to take him out. Some members of my family were all for it, others guilted me. I waited until he was almost 3 weeks before we started going out more. Everyone is different about, and I get that...

It was the floppy head that really got me.

  • Yes.  Not for having the baby out necessarily, but definitely for not supporting the baby's head.

  • I'd probably judge - not for having the baby out, but for not having the head supported.

But.... as for the age, regardless of how small, you really can't tell how old that baby was.  Natalie was about the size of an average newborn when she was around a month old and she was not a preemie.

This. The only time I judged anyone for taking their baby out was when mom and baby still had hospital ID bracelets on and she was in line at the grocery and bought cigarettes. I judged very harshly then.

  • I'd probably judge for the head support thing.  I didn't take the twins out until after their first round of shots and they stayed in their carriers the whole time but that was my decision.  I've run into tons of 6 and 8-week old babies out and about.

However, like some of the PP have said it's hard to judge age by size.  DD was not technically preemie (at 37.5 weeks) but she was very small and only fit preemie clothes.  She is just now starting to fill out her 3-6 month outfits.

    I guess I would only mini-judge.

  • I'm just lurking here obviously! I guess I'm just surprised at how many people would judge her for taking her baby out. It makes me wonder how many people were side-eyeing me when Landon was born. He was 35w and 4d when he was born. Weighed 3lb 13oz. Stayed 6 days in the hospital until he gained up to 4lb. We took him out if we needed to go somewhere. He was a healthy preemie (no breathing issues, ect.) so I saw no problem. He was covered up, dressed for the season (February), and wasn't passed around to strangers. I wasn't about to become a germaphobe. He never once got sick until he started daycare at 7 months, then it was just an ear infection.

I did have one lady try to lecture me in target, but I told her he was me baby so she needed to find her place. So I guess no judgement for bringing him out. Eh on the head support. Instead of judging, I'd probably assume she doesn't know better.

  • I took my baby out a day or two after we came home from the hospital. We needed stuff, and we had to go out and get it. Also, plenty of people thought he looked a week old when he was 1-2 months old.

However, it doesn't matter if a baby is 3 days old or 3 months old, if the baby's head is flopping, it needs support. I'm not sure how anyone could not know that. Wouldn't someone at the hospital mention it? That seems very weird.

I also think it's weird not to have a tiny baby in a car seat or carrier. Maybe because of the head support issue, I guess.

It's easy for us to say that, when it's something that seems like common knowledge. But I'm am surprised everyday at what people don't know about babies. i work in health care and I see it everyday. Unfortunately, common knowledge.. isn't.

  • I would not have judged her for having her baby out early.  I had DS out when he was 2 days old.  It drives me crazy when people think they need to sequester themselves in their homes for 3 months because they're afraid of taking baby out.

However, the floppy headed thing...I might have judged.

  • I was so terrified of taking my LO out when she was first born, worried she would scream or cry, it took me months to be comfortable taking her out. So now when I see people with little babies at different places like sporting events I'm in awe. If they can handle them, good for them but if I seen them face front I would be probably judge. Just yesterday I seen a infant at BRU asleep in a stroller with his head all the way forward with his nose in his chest, while his parents shopped. I wanted to gently lift his head.
