2nd Trimester

weight gain

I'm 26 weeks and have gained 17lbs... probably could have done better than that and be a few lbs lighter but I'm not trying to worry about my weight too much as long as I eat good and exercise and dont go over 30lbs. My doctor says between 20-35 is fine. My doctor that I work for daughter has only gained 5 lbs and she is 28 weeks... she says that her doctor says that is fine and she is healthy... I'm confused! Now I'm starting to worry that I'm gaining too much. Opinions?

Re: weight gain

  • With DS I gained 25 pounds first tri, and 75 total. I think you're fine. I wouldn't drive myself nuts about it. I've only gained 4 this time, so far. Every pregnancy is different.

  • Just try to eat healthy and don't worry about the weight. And don't compare yourself to other pregnant women, everyone is different. You can do harm to your baby's development by dieting, so I would not do anything drastic.

  • I'm really trying to watch my weight this pregnancy, but in a healthy way. Its hard because I still want stuff I shouldn't have, but i cut out almost all soda, which made a huge difference I think, I drink tons of water, and I'm trying to force myself to eat salads, soups, fresh fruit and such, but make sure i'm still meeting my daily requirments for vitamins, protien, and such. Its working so far, and I'm mostly just doing a 'clean eating' diet. I do allow snacks if i really want them too. I started overweight, (after losing 25 lbs last year) I wanted to lose more before I got pregnant but that didn't happen so I'm not wanting to gain any extra, but I don't want to hurt the baby by not eating either. You will find a balance, just do what you can and realize your body is not the same as anyone elses and try to enjoy your pregnancy.

  • You can't compare yourself to other pregnant women.  Everyone gains at different rates, and everyone's bodies are going to require different things weight-wise.  Plus, I think a lot of people lie about how much they've gained anyway!  If your doc says you are fine, then you are fine--that's all you need to know.

Agreed.  Don't try to compare yourself with others.  I compared myself to others and it wasn't healthy.  I had hyperemesis for 5 months and all the doctors and nurses told me was..EAT EAT EAT.  And because I couldn't keep much down, I would eat whatever I could, not necessarily healthy stuff and now that I am better, I am eating healthier but I gained weight pretty quickly. But I look back to the first 5 months where I couldn't eat much and hated eating and am happy to eat now and stopped worrying about the numbers, as long as the doctors think I'm fine and I'm not eating french fries for every meal.

  • With DD I gained 35 total..Once I hit 14 weeks I was gaining 7lbs a month..I gained nothing at first..My cousin put on 60! Everyones different.

This time I'm down at least 20 and havent put anything back on yet but I started out 25lbs heavier than DD and I'm no mini..

  • My starting weight when I found out I was pregnant was 123, I am 26 weeks this week and I am up to 151! To me, thats crazy and I know its because for one, Im not hardly even exercising, I just havent been able to get motivated and when I am motivated I cant get to the gym. I also eat out with my parents once a week and my husband anywhere from 1-2 times a week so that doesnt help either.. we used to only eat out once a week total and now I'm eating out 2-3 times a week!!

My doctor never told me how much I should gain and hasnt said anything about my weight gain so I assume I am doing fine.
