When is everyone taking maternity leave?

So far I have asked for the week before my due date but as I get closer, the more exhausted I am. I am thinking maybe I should bump up my leave a week earlier, so 2 weeks before my due date. What is everyone else doing?

Re: When is everyone taking maternity leave?

  • I am actually scheduled to work a 12 hour shift on my due date! Actually since I work nights I won't get off work until 7am on the 18th, I'm due on the 17th.

  • Will bumping it up cut into your time after LO arrives? My doctor suggested telling my employer I will start my leave May 6, two days before my due date. Since there's no way of telling when LO will come unless planned induction or c section, I want to make sure I have as much time after he gets here as possible.

  • I don't get a maternity leave.. but I will probably stop working the week before I am due.. depends on how I feel.. heck I might work the week I deliever... just depends on how I am feeling.

  • i am working until this baby comes out... my doctor said "if you take off before all you have time to do is wait for baby to be here... it will go faster" I have been feeling good and although by the end of my 12's i'm tired... i want to spend as much time with baby after she gets here
  • I'm due May 2nd and my maternity leave starts April 21st (or sooner if my GD has anything to say about it), due to Good Friday and Spring Break (Teacher). It's 11 days before my due date.

    Can't friggin wait!

  • I plan to work through the week of my due date. (I'm due May 4 and my last day will be either May 5 or May 6).  Hopefully I can just "work from home" so that they won't count it as actual maternity leave until the baby is born.

That said... we'll see how I feel. My commute is 1.5 hours each way and that may be overly ambitious.

  • 4 weeks before my EDD, if not sooner. I took 3 weeks off before my daughter and it wasn't enough. I have to be on my feet way too much at work and the stress level isn't good either.

  • Though this was the subject of an FFC (Darn canucks bragging about their year off) I'm off now- 7 weeks early. It does cut into my 52 weeks, but I was using a lot of sick days due to my SPD and if I missed much more work I'd probably be fired anyway. I've made myself a list of stuff to do around the house and am starting in on nesting :) I've already cleaned the fridge from top to  bottom (Saturday) and waxed the hardwood floors that make up the upper level of our house (today), started a cross-stitch for my nephew etc.
  • I'm working to 38 weeks, but I get a lot more leave than most of you, so a couple weeks before is not a big deal. I've got a desk job, so I should be fine.
  • Due May 6th-ish. Taking off April 18th. Work for myself, so there's no real negotiations going on there :)
  • I will be working up until the minute I go into labor!  I only get 6 weeks and I am not spending a minute of it sitting at home waiting (unless I have to)!

Gah! So jealous.  I work for myself and don't have "maternity leave" per se.  I'm thinking of calling it informal quits around April 20 (due 4/29) to relax and work around the house, responding to work matters as absolutely necessary.  Even after LO arrives, I'll have to respond to some emails and conference calls now and then; expecting to return to work by 6/15.

Same here...but I do have some flexibility to work from home, so I might try to do more of that once the due date gets closer.

  • I am planning on leaving May 1.  I am due at the very end of May, I don't get Maternity Leave so its not like I am using up time.  I may do some busy work from home if we have any.  My project that I am working on is due by the middle of April, so once thats done and has been reveiwed 2 weeks is plenty of time for me to tie up loose ends.  I can't wait, I have been frustrated here since before I got pregnant.

  • I'm only getting six weeks of paid leave and we're going to avoid unpaid leave if at all possible, so I'm holding out as long as possible. It's just a desk job.

  • Due Monday May 23rd.
Last day of work will be Thursday May 12th. (So just over a week before I'm due)

I want a week to myself before she arrives. Plus I work in an office where it'll be easier on them if we know my leave date so they can find someone to work here while I'm gone.

  • I'm working up until I go into labor and praying my water doesn't break at work! Lol! I want to have as much time as possible when the baby is here, and since my maternity leave sucks, using it before hand is wasteful in my case. If I had it my way, I would take the week before my due date off.

If it does cut into your time after the LO arrives, I wouldn't take off earlier, unless it is really unbearable. Personally, I always planned on working up until the due date. Now that I work from home, I am definitely working up until I go into labor. Since your baby is likely to come within the 2 weeks before or after, you could be sitting around for a month before they even get here. Though, she might get here before your leave is set to begin. It's all a big guessing game, but I wouldn't take off any extra time before hand.

  • Right up until my scheduled c-section date.  I might change my mind and take off a couple of days early.

  • I'm working up to 35.5 weeks (April 8th is my last day, due May 11th).  I decided to go out early because of the travel involved with my job,  we are moving in June so I want to pack up as much as I can before baby gets here and I'm most likely not coming back to my job after maternity leave so it doesn't really matter too much when I start it.

  • I just work part time and I don't really get "maternity leave"-it's not paid or anything like that. So the plan is to work up until I go into labor...maybe taking off a couple days early if it gets to the point where I know I'm going to have to be induced or something. I'm only taking 6 weeks-7 tops.
  • I am due May 22, which is a Sunday, so I told them my last day would be the Friday before. I want as much time as possible with LO after I have her, even though work will be exhausting!
  • I worked right up until the day I went into labor with my DS, and I will do the same with this baby.  I want to use all of my leave for when the baby is here.  Exhaustion won't go away once they get here! Just remember that.  :)

  • I decided that my last day of work will be April 29 and I am due May 9, so that gives me a little over a week off before my due date unless LO arrives early.

  • I am going right up until LO decides to come out. I don't want to cut into my time off for after he is here.

That being said, I get to work from home... it is a bit easier for me to "relax"

  • I am due May 21st and my last working day is May 19th.  People think I am crazy, but I don't want to just be sitting there waiting and waiting!  DH was going to start his leave on May 16th, but I told him what would be the point if I am still working!

  • My last day will be April 30th. I am not due until May 20th but my doctors won't let me go past 39 weeks due to hypertension, GD, and other issues. I do in home care for developmentally disabled adults and its a miracle I get through my days now so I'm gonna give myself a little break. This makes me sad though that I will have less time with LO, if I weren't having complications, or didn't have such a physically exhausting job I would work up until the day.

  • I am a teacher; and I am working up until May 2nd. I am due the 17th. However, my original due date was the 9th; so I wanted some time before that date.

Since I work with little kids, I am so scared of going into labor at work--and getting all those uncomfortable questions. LOL.

  • Originally I was going to work almost up to my scheduled c/s (which I'm still waiting for) but everyday I am more sore and more tired, so I'm starting to think about stopping at 37-38 weeks.

  • I'm due on the 19th, and am planning to start leave on the 16th.  I'm a teacher, though, so as long as he doesn't come before April 25th, I can take from then on off and not have to go back until August.  I'm only staying until the 16th to cut down on what I would need the sub to do, since I'm still responsible for their final grades.

  • I'm technically going out at Week 38, but it actually is Week 37, b/c of Spring Break. Which I am counting the days towards, b/c teaching from a chair is getting really old (and non-productive) and I can't really stand for more than about 10 minutes at a time without being in screamin' pain. H and I budgeted for extra time on the back end (unpaid FMLA) and then there's summer break, so I'm getting a pretty good deal, I think. H got 2 weeks paternity leave (gratis) and then arranged to take an additional week PTO. So, he'll be here to learn how to do this with me--for three weeks, WOW!--but he won't take off until baby actually gets here (obviously).

Yay for May (or as close to it as possible) babies.
