XP from May 2011: What do u think about bumper pads?

Hey girls!

Im not sure if this has been discussed before.. ive lurked but not really seen anything, They say that bumper pads are dangerous. I have them on our crib, but she isnt going to be in the crib exclusively. Just for naps. Since i am having a RCS, i will be in the living room and she will be sleeping in a pack n play bed. We did this with DS, because trying to get up in that tall bed was a horror after surgery! So my question is, how do you feel about bumpers? Have they been a threat to your LO's? If you have tried the breathable mesh ones, do you like them?

TIA

  • We just left them off completely and it was fine.

  • I didn't use them with DS.  I don't think you need them when they're really little, and I didn't think I would stop worrying with them in.  When he started rolling, I got him breathable bumpers.  They worked well. I did have to pull them up before almost every nap and bedtime.

  • From Health Canada:

Health Canada has identified the following safety hazards associated with the use of bumper pads:

    • Plush, soft or pillow-like bumper pads pose a greater suffocation hazard to infants than those that are both thinner and firmer.
    • Bumper pads that do not fit around the entire crib pose an enhanced safety hazard because they leave an opening in which a child can wedge his or her head and become entrapped between the bumper pad and the side of the crib.
    • Bumper pads that are not able to be secured (by ribbons, strings, or ties) on their top and bottom edges at all corners of the crib, as well as midpoints of the long sides of the crib, also pose enhanced safety risks because they are not only capable of falling over and smothering the infant, but also are capable of being pulled away from the side of the crib (by the infant), thereby creating an opening.
    • Bumper pads with an excess length [greater than 23 cm (9 inches)] of ribbons, strings, or ties, as well as bumper pads that are not secured with the ties outside of the crib, pose additional entanglement and strangulation hazards to infants.
    • Bumper pads that are present in the crib when the child is able to roll over or sit up unaided not only pose a suffocation hazard, but also are capable of being used as a climbing mechanism once the child starts pulling to a stand.
    • Stitching on the bumper pads that has come undone poses an entanglement and a strangulation hazard to infants.

Also: "The presence of bumper pads in a crib may also be a contributing factor for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). These products may reduce the flow of oxygen rich air to the infant in the crib. Furthermore, proposed theories indicate that the rebreathing of carbon dioxide plays a role in the occurrence of SIDS.1"

This is the information I used on forming my opinion. I will not be using bumper pads of any type. If he starts getting his arms/legs caught or banging his head, I will buy breathable bumpers down the road. But for now they are purely aesthetic and not worth the risk posed. I will take the bumpers that came with my set and with some minor adjustments make them into a chair pad for my rocker.

  • We use breathable bumpers and love them. Safe and easy (and I never had to pull mine up like PP mentioned) and when DD started moving more, kept her from getting an arm through the side and screaming (which she did in my parents' bumperless crib and made me wake up almost every night of our vacation lol).
  • We didn't use any at all until DD was about 6 months old. The only reason we added them was b/c she kept getting her legs stuck in the side of the crib AND we have an older drafty house and I wanted to keep her warmer.

  • We started with them, but found them to be a giant PITA when you need to change the bed 9,000 times. So we trashed them about 3 weeks in.

  • My pedi is dead set against them, so I do not plan to use one.

  • Meh. We used them with DD#1 b/c our house is drafty. Not one problem. She wasn't a big roller in her sleep so they weren't a problem when she got older.
