Hitting head?

K's new thing is smacking her head and pulling her hair.  She doesn't seem upset, so I'm guessing this is just a phase?  Maybe her hair is just now growing enough for her to figure out she has some :)

Re: Hitting head?

  • L (my nephew) used to do this. Do you react to her when she is doing it? L used to do it for attention.

  • Hudson does this a lot too!  It started about 4-5 months ago and he seems to do it mostly when he's tired.  He slaps himself in the side of the head and pulls on his hair while he's falling asleep.

At first we thought maybe he had another ear infection because it started right after he had one, but I took him to the dr. and he was fine .. so maybe it is just a phase .. or they are realizing they're getting some hair (Hudson LOVES everyone elses hair and tries to pull on it too ..)

  • I remember reading somewhere that head hitting and head banging is fairly normal. It was possibly parenting magazine that I saw that.

  • For us it's also a sign that he's tired.  He tends to do it right before naptime or bedtime.
  • Mads has gone through a phase with that and with biting herself.  The biting came first and at first it freaked me out!!!  But, my very wise step MIL pointed out that if she was hurting herself, she'd stop....

So, we stopped reacting to it and after a few weeks, it stopped.  Same with the banging/pulling.

:(  I hate those types of phases....

  • N has been doing this a lot lately too! I noticed a few weeks ago that he would hit the side of his head with his hand. I thought It might be an ear infection and had the ped check at his well child visit but there was nothing. The doc said it's a pretty normal way they self sooth at this age.I started to watch it more carefully and it does seem to happen mostly when he is tired as others said. Recently it has turned in to a hair pull at the same time. I guess they will just grow out of it, but it is hard to watch your kid pound themselves in the head!

Max did this too, especially the biting himself thing. Better himself than me or someone else. He also does the hair pulling/hitting himself when he's tired. I agree with IG's very wise MIL, if they hurt themselves, they will stop.

  • L has been doing that for a while now too. Glad to hear he's not the only one. He tends to do it when he's super tired and having his bottle. It's hard to watch, but if I try to hold his arm at all, he flips! Guess this too shall pass, right?   Stick out tongue

  • Thanks all - so today I watched and it's definitely a tired thing.  Seriously, I like soft music or warm blankets to soothe myself to sleep, maybe I should try smacking myself in the head.
