Hey girls!
Im not sure if this has been discussed before.. ive lurked but not really seen anything, They say that bumper pads are dangerous. I have them on our crib, but she isnt going to be in the crib exclusively. Just for naps. Since i am having a RCS, i will be in the living room and she will be sleeping in a pack n play bed. We did this with DS, because trying to get up in that tall bed was a horror after surgery! So my question is, how do you feel about bumpers? Have they been a threat to your LO's? If you have tried the breathable mesh ones, do you like them?
TIA
Re: XP from May 2011: What do u think about bumper pads?
From Health Canada:
Health Canada has identified the following safety hazards associated with the use of bumper pads:
Also: "The presence of bumper pads in a crib may also be a contributing factor for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). These products may reduce the flow of oxygen rich air to the infant in the crib. Furthermore, proposed theories indicate that the rebreathing of carbon dioxide plays a role in the occurrence of SIDS.1"
This is the information I used on forming my opinion. I will not be using bumper pads of any type. If he starts getting his arms/legs caught or banging his head, I will buy breathable bumpers down the road. But for now they are purely aesthetic and not worth the risk posed. I will take the bumpers that came with my set and with some minor adjustments make them into a chair pad for my rocker.
We didn't use any at all until DD was about 6 months old. The only reason we added them was b/c she kept getting her legs stuck in the side of the crib AND we have an older drafty house and I wanted to keep her warmer.
My pedi is dead set against them, so I do not plan to use one.
