How *do* you get on a schedule?

I don't know why I'm stressing about this.  Maybe it's because I go back to work in 4.5 weeks, so the motto "sleep when they sleep" is out the window.

How *do* you start to get them on a schedule?

Right now we're FF Jake.  He'll eat anywhere from 2-3ozs, but lately he wants to snack a lot inbetween...an ounce here, an ounce there.  There's no let up.

Re: How *do* you get on a schedule?

  • Have you tried increasing how much he eats at a feed? If he's snacking in between then he's obviously hungry.

We don't really have a schedule for DD. When she's hungry we feed her, she usually gets us up every 3 hours to eat.

  • Sometimes he'll take in 3.  Other times he only wants 2.  I can't force him to eat more.  Before it was every 3 hours like clock work.  Maybe it's a growth spurt.

  • It sounds like a growth spurt : )
  • If it is any consolation, DS would marathon feed in afternoon just before he  learned to sleep 6 hours through the night. It made afternoons miserable but in hindsight those were a golden 6 hours.

SIX HOURS?!?!?  Are you freaking serious?!?!?  I am so jealous of you!

  • I don't think you can get into any type of "schedule" until 3-4 months if you are lucky.  All the books say this and from what I have gathered from the 0-3 month board.  Some babies are easier than others, but I wouldn't get hopes up.  Some nights are fantastic - like last night she slept 4-5 hours at a time from 11pm to 10am.  But, the night before she was up every other hour.

  • I'm not looking to stir the pot here...

Read Babywise. It's working for us. Yes, some days the "schedule"  is wacked up because he's hungry when it's not feeding time, so I feed him, but we work to get back within an hour of scheduled eating time within a day or so. It's working for us... he will eat (give or take an hour) at 5 am, 9am, 1pm, 5pm, 9pm. and 1am.

  • Babies do have growth spurts at 3 and 6 weeks, 3 and 6 months so your little one is right on track for one right now.  I'd love a schedule for my DS but that's not likely happening anytime soon!

  • addison was on a good 3 hour schedule for eating.  the doctor had us supplementing one feeding a day with formula but now i've gotten lazy and have just been doing formula when its easier for me because last week she hit some sort of growth spurt and has been eating every 2-2.5 hours and knocking back about 3oz everytime. only my right boob works anyway and when i would feed her she would scream like she was still hungry so i'd give her enough to finish her off.  i have no idea how to even begin on a schedule now and don't even get me started on trying to get her to go to bed at night instead of during the day. every monday i say we're gonna get on a schedule and get it right. no dice.

Why do you think you're stirring the pot just because you're enjoying the advice of a book?  Some people like that book while others don't, but it's not stirring the pot.  And who cares if people have negative opinions of it.  If it's working for you, then that's awesome!

I just wanted the disclaimer so people don't jump down my throat about it. Didn't want drama. Big Smile

Everyone's going to have opinions.  Unfortunately with font and text, we can't hear everyone's tone.  Some people may come off the wrong way as we read while others really may off into the deep end.

I'm happy you're on a schedule!  Actually, I'm jealous.  I think with Jake being so little, his tiny belly can't hold as much.  Our stretches between feedings aren't very long.  But like tonight, he's ate 4 ozs at the last 2 feedings.
