Has anyone ever given cough medicine to DC?

Justin has a really dry, unproductive cough that is keeping him awake.  He is positively miserable.  The only other cold symptom he has is a slightly runny nose, but nothing major and certainly no green snot or anything.

I really want to give him some cough medicine to ease the scratchy throat but I don't know what to give or what the dose would be.  Any ideas?

  • Our pedi has told us it's perfectly fine to go ahead and give it but we still feel a little reluctant. If you decide not to, maybe try some honey? Sorry, I'm no help.

  • I just bought Little Noses, Honey Elixir as I got it per a recommendation on here (not sure if it was local or one of the others). I haven't used it yet but I've heard it's great.

  • Poor guy. The doc told us to give Maggie Benadryl when the pedi thought she had croup. It seemed to help. I don't recall the dosage offhand though.

  • Benadryl would help that, and most pedis are completely ok with it.  Tell me his weight and I can help with a dose.

  • We've tried the Little Noses Honey Cough medicine and honestly, a teaspoon of honey worked so much better.

Our pedi recommended Triaminic Nightime Cough which really just seems to help DD sleep better.

Have you tried honey? I swear it worked wonders on DD & DS.

He won't eat honey for love nor money.

  • Katie- 21mg.  What do you have on hand?  For Children's Benadryl (12.5 mg/5ml) you can give 1.5 teaspoons.  I always try to use less since it can be so sedating.  Maybe start with 1 tsp?

  • I have.  With dry cough I'd do Delsym which is a cough suppressant only, not an expectorant and has no alcohol or tylenol or anything else in it.
  • We were told to use Delsym when Ava and Charlotte both had bad colds at the beginning of the year.  We didn't end up using it, only because we've always just used honey (from the kitchen, haven't tried the elixir stuff) and it works fine for us.  Aside from that, they were already on antibiotics.

  • We have used Boiron Chestal and a couple of the Hyland's cough syrups with honey.  Both have worked well for Ethan.  Hope he feels better soon!

  • Katie- When I calculated a dose for Justin, I did Brenna's too, so I would know if we needed it again.  Sure enough, she woke up this morning just miserable with a constant runny nose.  I'm a bad mommy for even thinking it into existence.  Hope Justin is feeling better.

Oh no!  I hope it doesn't last long for Brenna.  Justin seems to feel much better today.  Not 100%, but lightyears better than yesterday.

And side note.......I heard him coughing around 11:30 PM last night, so I went up and measured out the Benadryl and went in his room.  He was sound asleep, and I couldn't wake him!  So he got no meds last night, but the sleep he got did him a world of good.  Hope it's the same for your household.
