Might Be Stupid Questions, But...

I haven't had my hair colored in awhile, but really want to get some highlights done soon...I just need something different because I'm so tired of my current hair.

I just have two questions...

It really should be fine to color my hair while pregnant, right?? I haven't asked my doctor about this but my hairstylist says its fine..I just know some people say you shouldn't, or at least wait until 2nd trim.

Should I worry about the color not taking or turning out differently? I was reading that sometimes pregnancy hormones can cause this.

Any experts out there?

  • I think it should be fine.  Here's some info from Baby Center about the subject.

  • I am not expert, but I had highlights done 6 weeks ago and my doctor was okay with it.  Highlights are generally considered safer because with foils, the chemicals never touch your scalp.  My hair didn't take the color any differently, but probably because it was bleach.  I think some people have experienced issues with their hair lifting differently, but this has not been my experience either.

One drawback is that I had roots very quickly because my hair has grown so fast from the pregnancy hormones.

  • My doctor advised me to not do all over color, but said highlights are fine. And your color absolutely may turn out different than expected. I haven't personally had my hair colored- since I always do allover dye, but my sister had hers highlighted several times during her pregnancy and it always turned out a little orange.

  • I'm not sure about all over color but I got my hair highlighted a few weeks ago and did some research on that. Highlights are safe when done in a well-ventilated area since the color/bleach doesn't touch your scalp. My hair processed fine but I know the color comes out differently for some pregnant women.
  • I have been going back and forth about highlighting my hair as it really needs to be done.  I did not do it with DD mainly cause I was scared the color would come out horrible, so I am going to most likely not get it done with this one either.  I figure as soon as I get my first alone time after DS is born I am going to get my hair done, and a pedicure!

  • Highlights are fine.  But if you never had highlights before and have not done anything to your hair I personally would not start changing things up.

  • I've gotten highlights and red color done within the past 6 weeks.

  • I got all over color and highlights done at 14 or 15 weeks, the only issue I had was it turned out more red than normal

I got mine colored about two weeks ago.  Don't laugh, but my husband colors my hair for me at home.  A few years ago, he lost his job, and when he did one of the things we cut out of the budget were my expensive hair color sessions every 8 weeks.  I am currently 34, but I get gray hair like a 50 year old, so I have a pretty good "reason" for coloring, or so I think.  Anyway, he has long since found a job, but paying $5 for a box of hair color vs. $100 at the salon just seemed like a good idea to keep doing.  He doesn't mind doing it, and I kind of like never having to leave my house to do it!!

Anyway, hubby did it for me two weeks ago, the gray was really bad (you figure 6 months of growing out it would be) and we did a different brand, on that only takes 10 mins, instead of the usual 25, and we opened a window, and he hurried as much as he could.  It looks so much better and I FEEL so much better!!

Look at it this way, ladies that work at salons get pregnant too, and they don't stop working...they have to work in a salon all day with hair color and perms, etc, etc, and they have happy, healthy children all the time.

  • I have had highlights with foils in all of my preganancies and they have always turned out great. I always wait to get them until the 2nd tri. though.

  • As long as the place you get your hair done at is opened and can air out the fumes. I did hear that the color might not be the same as you want it. I'm waiting until after the baby is born... kind of a reward.
