2nd Trimester

Uneasy feeling...

Hey gals,

One of my very best friends sent me a picture of her belly bump this past week.  She is a good solid 3 weeks behind me.  We live far away from each other so we aren't able to see each other very often.  I was shocked to see her belly!  It is a definite baby bump and mine is barely there.  I'm about 5'2 compared to her 5'6.  I would think, since I'm shorter, I would show a little bit more than someone with a taller frame.  I mean, she looks probably 5 weeks ahead of me!

It's hard for me not to worry....I had a miscarriage prior to this pregnancy, so I'm worrying about the health of this one every now and then. We heard the heartbeat at 12 weeks and I have felt some tiny flutters here and there. My son is 6, her son is only 2...do you think the difference between both of us is that is hasn't been that long since she has had a baby and it has for me? When did you guys start visibly showing?  I feel like I'm getting fat all over and have probably gained about 7-10 pounds, but I just don't look like I have a baby bump yet & quite frankly, I'm worried.

**sigh**

Thanks for all your advice and wisdom!

  • I don't think that showing is any indication of the health and well being of your baby. Everyone shows differently and at their own pace. I know you've got legitimate worries, I would try not to make this one of them. You're baby is fine, even if you don't show for a while longer.

  • If it makes you feel any better, I haven't gained anything and I'm barely showing at 24 weeks. My doctor actually said to me the other day that I don't even look pregnant. But everything is fine thus far. I think it just depends. Women's bodies react differently to pregnancy.

  • Im 5"3 and I have barely grown, dr hasnt said anything and although I would have thought being smaller I would get a belly faster since the dr hasnt said anything theres nothing to worry about :-)
  • Do not worry! Every person and every pregnancy is different. I think worrying comes with the territory, though. I have a bump coming along but some days I look huge and others I feel like there's nothing there. Try to take it easy and enjoy the experience. Comparing your pregnancy to anyone elses will not allow you to enjoy the experience. I'm going to tell you what my yoga instructor taught me. Try to connect with your baby. Rub your belly and imagine the little one swimming around in there. Focus on the present baby not on the future baby in your arms.Focus on the present moment and enjoy it. Hope it helps!
  • Don't stress!!! Everyone shows differently, it rarely has to do with height or weight, rather the shape of your pelvic bone and how curved it is (at least that's what my doctor explained to me).  She said that some women have a more bowl-shaped pelvis, giving the uterus (and baby) more room to rest deep inside the pelvic cavity and causing you to show less, whereas other women don't have as much of a "scoop" inside their pelvic bone, so  the uterus protrudes more and baby will thus stick out more, and those moms will show sooner.

  • Just relax. Every pregnancy is different so there is no use comparing yourself to your friend. Maybe she has gained more weight than you or maybe you are carrying more toward your back. Hang in there and try not to stress.

  • I didn't show with DS until I was 24 weeks. At 23 weeks, DS measured 3 weeks bigger on the ultrasound, so he was obviously doing very well. Showing is subjective. It has no bearing on the health of the pregnancy.

  • I was also feeling like I've barely got a belly at all. I even compared this belly to the pics I had in The Belly Book from when I was pregnant with DS. I'm carrying smaller this time, but I also haven't gained nearly as much weight. Maybe this ones a girl?

  • Girl I am 20 weeks and still just look tubby to strangers. I didn't start out small but I not a big girl either. So I don't think it means anything.
  • I wouldn't worry about it. I am 6 weeks behind and 2 inches taller than my best friend and I have a much rounder/larger bump than her. She has gained her weight kind of evenly all over and I have gained all mine in my belly (I had a big butt to begin with so thank goodness it hasn't gotten any bigger)
  • I was in my regular jeans until 22 weeks. Don't worry- I'm sure you're fine! I'm also short- 5 foot- if that matters.

  • I actually looked bigger at 13 weeks than 20 weeks because i was soo bloated.  Don't worry I just started getting a little bump last week.
