2nd Trimester

pap opinions. Help please!

Ok soooo tomorrow im going in for my blood test results from my first tri labs, and im supposed to get the routine pap that they do when youre pregnant.

Last January I had an abnormal pap, and in November I got a colposcopy and biopsy done. It showed 3 spots of mild and 1 moderate, but the dr opted to not do any further procedures such as leep since im younger than 26, and to have me re tested this july to see if it has gotten worse. I got pregnant at the end of Dec.

Im thinking of declining this pap, only because it will obviously be abnormal, and i will not let them do another biopsy until after I have the baby, because i have researched so much and read that your cervix can become incompetent, etc. and I do not want to be put on bedrest my whole pregnancy.

Would you still get the pap done? I know it wont hurt me, but i kind of feel like whats the point since we know it will be abnormal anyway.

My dr told me that childbirth will sometimes make your abnormalities disappear completely, if not I will opt to have a leep done after baby comes.

Opinions? thoughts? thanks ladies.

  • I think you need it so at least you know. Not only that, but if you aren't going to do the leep until after child birth then your level of severity can change.

I didn't think they generally wanted people to get pregnant while their paps were abnormal. That being said, I had one when I was 22 and a ton of other people I know had them when they were younger than 26 too. All of them have gone on to have normal pregnancy with no cervix issues.

  • You don't know for sure that it will be abnormal. My mom had an abnormal pap 9 months ago, with similar results as yours. She was told to come back every three months for a follow up. They said that many times, your body will take care of things on its own. It was still abnormal three months later, but came back normal at the sixth month mark. I would still get the pap done. You can refuse further testing, but I think it is important to know what you are dealing with.

My Dr said it was not a problem at all to be pregnant, especially since they were not doing any procedures, and said if it progresses after your first trimester they wait until the baby is born to do anything about it anyway. I think every Dr treats differently, and because mine was mostly mild thats why they didnt want to do the LEEP.

But I didnt think about the fact that it could possible NOT be abnormal, so I suppose I will get it done!

  • I would still get the pap.  Ususally they will hold off on any kind of biopsy until after preganancy.  At least with the pap you will have your follow up.  You would be surprised it may be normal.

  • If it helps, I've had abnormal paps for the past 2 years. Ive had to colposcopies and biopsies to just see where it is. I got pregnant in November after another abnormal pap in September. I was supposed to go back this month for another follow up with the gyny (read -- colposcopy again), but didnt. They did the pap in my first trimester and it was still normal for me (which is to say, abnormal), but they arent doing anything until after the kid comes -- not even this 6 month check. Everything is fine with me...the baby is healthy (thank G-d) and growing normally and so far, this has been an extremely normal pregnancy. Just do the pap...it wont hurt. Don't worry about this. I'm sure you'll be fine.

  • thanks for the advice ladies! im going to do it :)
  • With my 3rd child I had an abnormal pap.  My dr also did biopsys about 3 times during that pregnancy just to be sure the spots did not progress to cancer.  I was not put on bed rest, but I did spend the day on the couch the day of the biopsys. I was a little sore, but the next day I was fine.  When my DD was 3 months old I had them removed.  This happened 17 years ago, since then I had another child, and I am due to have a suprise baby boy in July.

Its always better to know than to worrry throughout your pregnancy.

  • My midwife was also telling me that a vaginal delivery can clear up pap abnormalities.  I had one done before I got pregnant and it was also abnormal, but I decided there is no reason to have one until after the baby is born, since its likely to be the same now, and there isn't much to do about it.

  • Definitely do it. I've had abnormal paps too for the last 2 years even after 2 cryosurgeries... if they are abnormal, many doctors won't do a biopsy since you're pregnant and they can't do anything for you anyways, and if they do want to, you can just tell them you don't want a biopsy. That's what I'm planning as soon as my results come back. Not to mention you really NEED one because paps also screen for chlamydia and gonorrhea... your blood work doesn't, and c & g can actually hurt your baby so you have to make sure you don't have them, or if you do get them cleared up asap.
