What are your tricks?

I need to figure out how better to keep the toys cleaned up throughout the day.  The kids have access to all their toys at one time via toy bins and the play kitchen.

Currently they just play with whatever they pull out most of the day, it isn't like they dump everything out.  But it is stressful to me that I can pick everything up and have it a mess again by the end of the day, if not sooner.

I'm debating adding in a toy cleanup before lunch.  WDYT?  We do some picking up before bed, Mady gets to pick between books or kitchen toys and Declan typically does the movies since he can reach it and it's easier for him.

It isn't like we even have what I would consider a ton of toys, they just take over so easily since they're smaller, they get scattered!

Re: What are your tricks?

  • Well, they're more DH's tricks than mine, but we have DS (and we help) clean up various toys before he gets others out - not all the time, but especially with bigger things - games, puzzles, his blocks/lincoln logs, anything with a lot of pieces.  We also do a small clean up before nap - not everything, but enough that there's not a bunch of stuff out.  Then we do a final clean up of toys before bed.  It keeps it pretty manageable.

  • we do a pickup before nap and i also make them pick up certain things before doing something that they really want to do. say they want to draw with markers--it's my job to get the art stuff set up and ready while they clean up whatever else is out.

it works *some* of the time. i have become pretty lenient esp. with the rainy weather. a fun time for them means dumping out the entire toybox, or bookshelf, or stuffed animal bin and "building a house" which means sitting on top of the pile. if they are having fun and keeping each other entertained, and playing nicely together, i don't mind picking up when they're asleep or playing in the sandbox.

trying to keep up and keep everyone from tripping over stuff is totally exhausting!!!

  • pretty much what papa said... We clean up blocks and/or any balls that get kicked out of the ball pit immediately when we are finished playing w/ them cuz both those things strewn about the floor DRIVE ME NUTS! I step on them, she trips on them... it's just bad. haha Books, sadly, always seem to be everywhere no matter what I do. We do cleanup before nap and bed as well though. It's the only way I can stay sane.

  • Evvie cleans up her toys (with our help) before nap and before bed each day.  It really helps me feel like I'm not doing *everything* and I feel like it helps her learn about keeping our space clean.  Now, if we're somewhere else (a friend's house, whatever), and I say it's time to go - let's clean up! She starts putting toys away :)
