Pumping Moms, storage question?

What is your favorite way to store/freeze your BM? I will be going back to work (part time) when the baby is 2 months old, and I never went back to work after having DD so this is new to me. I want to make it super easy for DH since he never like pulling the BM out of the fridge and warming it up for DD.

Re: Pumping Moms, storage question?

  • I liked the plastic milk storage bags (like heavy duty ziplocs). The frozen milk was really easy to defrost that way, just put it in the fridge for awhile or hold under running water.

  • I liked the lansinoh (sp?) bags. I laid them flat to freeze in 4oz sizes, since that how much Eli took at a time. Super easy to defrost, just put them in the fridge the night before or run a frozen one under warm water. these bags were my favorite cause they actually froze flat the best of all the kinds I tried. I was able to get hudreds of ounces in my freezerbecause of it. I think at one time I had close to 500 ounces in there!

  • Yep. The bags. Although I did have some that leaked when I thawed them so I started putting them inside a ziplock when I was running them under water so if there was a leak I wouldn't lose milk. Also you don't need to freeze everything. You can just leave what you pump today in the fridge for tomorrow. Just freeze the "extra". Then he won't have to deal with thawing milk all the time.

  • If your baby will use the drop-ins bottles, they make a storage set so that you can freeze the milk directly in the drop-in liner.  My friend does that and loves it.  However, we tried a different brand of bottle and didn't like the way that they took up more space in the freezer.

I store mine flat in the plain bags, but I like the Honeysuckle bags more than the Lansinoh ones - I have never had a leak with them.  I thaw them in lukewarm water in a plastic container in the sink.  I thaw one the night before and make a bottle, and then use fresh milk for the other bottles.  I leave a little more freshly pumped milk in a larger rubbermaid-type bottle in the fridge in case it's needed, and then freeze it at the end of the day if it wasn't used.  That way I keep my freezer stash fresher and caregivers rarely have to deal with thawing it.

  • I have been using the Nuk plastic bags because they are cheaper and haven't had any problems with leaking, I don't however thaw in the fridge, I just pull out of freezer and stick in hot water.

  • I think they have the lansinoh bags on Amazon subscribe and save.

  • We stored it in the Lansinoh bags (which I really liked, especially since you can get them at the grocery store).  Make sure when you put them in the freezer, to lay them flat so they will freeze that way.  When you are ready to use, either take out a day in advance and defrost in the fridge, or set the bag of milk in a bowl with hot water (should take about 5 min that way to defrost it).
  • Another vote for the Lansinoh bags :)
  • I do Lansinoh bags. I did the Medela bags with Syd and they just don't freeze flat enough. I do them in 2-3 oz portions because I know she'll eat at least that much in one sitting.

This was our system too.  4 oz flat in lansinoh bags.

  • I liked using the Medela bags because you could pump directly into them.  They had a sticker strip thing that made the bag hang off of your pump.  When I went back to work, I went back half time, so I only had to pump once.  I'm dreading going back full time after we have #2... Half time was so much easier!
