Activity for your 1 month old

What kind of "play" are you doing with your 1 month old?  I'm trying to get into the eat, activity, sleep routine but am struggling with what I should be doing with Anna for the activity.  We do some tummy time, I talk to her or read to her, I have an activity mat with hanging toys but she would rather stare at the ceiling fan.  What are you doing with your LO and how long can you keep them entertained before they fuss or fall asleep?

  • I must be a bad mother, because I don't think about this stuff.

  • I try to do 10-30 minutes max with dd. Usually just face ti face time, swing time for me counts because of the mobile , mat tim e and tummy time. 1hbft lol

  • Mostly just face to face time. I talk to her and sing to her. We also do some tummy time, she doesn't care for the swing or toys yet. Right now she finds faces more interesting than anything else. She can only handle about 30 minutes before she starts to fuss.

  • The swing is the death trap for Jake.  He hates it.  I hope it's just because he's so little right now.  Last night he was in it for a good 30 minutes, but this morning he wanted nothing to do with it.  We also tried the activity mat last night, but it wasn't a huge hit either.  So mainly it's the moby, face to face, and the boppy pillow.

  •  Playschool guide to baby play is a great book.  There are games and activities to do with your baby for each stage that concentrates on each of the senses and developing each.  This is my first baby and I think this book will really be great.  I have only read the first few pages that concentrate on the first month or so, but it really made a lot of sense to me and all very simple interactions.  Good luck.
  • I do tummy time on his activity mat until he starts fussing, usually about 10 minutes then flip him over to his back and he loves to stare at the mirror on his mat.

He also likes to lay on our bed and stare into the mirror for a while too.  He's a big mirror fan.  I sometimes turn on the radio and sing and dance with him, he seems to enjoy hearing me sing to him.

Usually he's chilling out in his swing or bouncy chair though.

We also do face to face and tummy time but I also try to do a couple minutes of bicycle legs and moving his arms around (usually while singing to him Smile)
  • They really don't need much at this age, but if you're looking for ideas, check out the book Baby Play by Gymboree and this page on babycenter:

I always loved reading to my kids when they were newborns - they're a very captive audience at that age.  Wink
