Screaming, crying and hyperventilating in the car!

DD has been awful in the car after about 20 minutes lately. She cries so hard she can't breath. It's so unnerving and stressful. What can I do? I tried talking to her, ignoring it, reaching back and rubbing her head......nothing works. She will eventually fall asleep but I don't how much more I can take.

    Oh no! That would make me bonkers. Maybe a toy that has lights/music? Something you can hook to her carseat or on the seat behind her?

    Two things you might try - first make sure the straps of the car seat are still fitting appropriately, if she's grown and you haven't readjusted the straps she may be uncomfortable. Also, you can get a mirror that hooks on the back of the seat, it helps you to see her and her to see you, which might ease some crying. Good luck!

    This probably sounds crazy, but when Camden won't stop crying in the car I turn the radio up really loudly. He stops crying almost immediately and will fall asleep within 5 minutes!

    This doesn't sound crazy to me. S went through a phase of crying in the car and this would work every time. (obviously not loud enough to hurt her ears.) Eventually we got a convertible carseat so now she can look all around and has a grand old time in the car.

    I would ditto pp and check to make sure everything's still fitting well. I think we took out the newborn insert somewhere between 3 and 4 months and that helped a lot. I also sing in the car to her, that usually helps her calm down. Pair all that with her trio of companions- pacifier, Sophie, and her peacock toy and we can usually get somewhere without a meltdown.

    Thank you everyone. I have literally tried just about everyone's suggestions besides taking the infant inserts out, I think they hold in a lot of heat too and she always seems warm in the car. I'm at a loss if that doesn't work. I guess she will be staying with someone when I need to go too far from home.

    Can you move her into a convertible?  She might do better sitting up and not being so reclined.
