Babies: 3 - 6 Months

how often do you boil/sterilize?

just curious...someone told me recently that you shouldn't at all, just use soapy water.  what gives?  do you boil/sterilize frequently?

we use born free bottles, so there are a lot of parts and nooks & crannies and i always thought i was supposed to boil/sterilize them periodically.  i've been doing it a bit more often lately because DS is sick (thanks daycare).

Re: how often do you boil/sterilize?

  • we use born free and I sterilize after every washing. They get all filmy if I dont I use their microwave sterilizer 4min then GTG :D

  • I haven't sterilized since the first time. At least once a week, they are put in the dishwasher. More often than not, since we don't always have a full dishwasher, they soak in hot, soapy water. I have the Playtex Ventaire Advanced.

  • Public Health told us to sterilize everything after every washing until 4 months. Water included. So we did. Dr. Brown's microwave sterilizer -- 5 minutes. I don't miss sterilizing though. Bottle prep is so much quicker now.

  • We suspected thrush on and off for the first three months or so, so I boiled everything every night for a very long time.  Now I just boil bottle parts, pump parts and pacis probably every 3-4 weeks.  Instead we immediately soak everything in hot soapy water when we get home, and scrub the crap out of it to get everything clean.

  • We boil about once a week.  DD has thrush problems, and I just found out, shares bottle parts with other babies at daycare that use the same bottle (they get mixed up while being washed and sanitized, but still).  I don't have time to sanitize pacifiers and bottles more often than this.
  • I sterilize bottles and pump parts once a week. I honestly don't think it's necessary at this point for us, but I still do it out of habit.

Wow.  There has got to be a way that they can be labeled better.  That would eek me the f out.

They are the Ventaire... the nipples bother me more than anything.  I just realized it Friday, I am saying something to the director Monday.

Good idea.  One  day I arrived at day care to find another baby's pacifier in DD's mouth.  I nearly vomited.  Day cares are cesspools already - they don't need any additional help sharing their baby germs.

  • I use my microwave bags to sterilize every day. I used to do once a week but I noticed my fresh pumped milk was going bad in the fridge very quickly so I decided to up it to see if that helped.
  • I usually sterilize once a week but v has been sick so ive been doing it every night.

  • I sterilize my pump parts once a week with the steam bag. I just wash everything else after every use. I have considered putting our bottles through a dishwasher cycle though.

I sterilize pacis about once a week (our bottle warmer has a attachment that steams them).

  • I use the steam bag with my pump parts every few days. My LC told me to sterilize them every night though even though I don't.

  • I have a sterilizer and sterilize everything after every wash, except pacis. Those I sterilize every week... I try to wash them every 2 days, and if they fall, I usually sterilize them after washing. I replace the pacis every 6 weeks also.

omg! none of that is ok and I would be livid! That's got to be a licensing violation.

  • I sterilize bottles and pacis after every use and plan on keep doing it until DS is 6mo, that's what I was told on prenatal classes and the pedi suggested the same thing

This. I did the same with DS. We use the drop ins, so I just pop the bottle nipples and my pump parts in the microwave sterilizer after they have been washed.

I abhor pumping, so I won't allow the possibility of anything ruining my stash. lol

  • I've read that after the initial sterilization, you only need to use warm soapy water to wash them. However, our dishwasher has a sanitize option, so every few days (aka every time we need to wash them )we just stick them all in there. It's way easier than doing it all by hand.

I was told the same things. Also told to distill water until 6 months.
