swaddling

How many of you guys are still swaddling?  Has anyone weaned their LO from the swaddle?

I have a karate kid / baby houdini so the only swaddle that works for us is the Swaddle Me -- she can break out of regular swaddle blankets and even the Miracle Blanket.  When she was just a week or two old, we only swaddled her at night, but since she started being more active, we've had to swaddle her for every nap.  I don't love the idea of her being swaddled that much of the day, but I tried to get her to nap yesterday morning without it and she kept waking herself up when she got close to drifting off.  Maybe next time I try I'll just swaddle her with one arm out instead of no swaddle at all.  Would love to hear what everyone else is doing...

Re: swaddling

  • We escape proof swaddle (look it up on youtube) and have since birth. We swaddle for most naps and bedtime. About halfway through the night he gets unswaddled, but by that point he has stopped flailing. During the day he is just too awake and will punch himself awake if he isn't swaddled. If he sleeps in the car he doesn't seem to do that, which is strange...

Also, the other day, he even broke the escape proof swaddle, so I feel your baby Houdini pain!

We do this at night.  Your LO wont break out of this!

  • I just saw the escape-proof swaddle the other day but since we already have a couple of Swaddle Mes, it's a lot easier to keep using those because they're super fast to put on.  And she really doesn't get out of them -- I think once I've seen her little fingers poking out the top and that's it.

But I'm wondering when she'll stop with the punching and kicking in her sleep.  It just seems unnatural for me to be restricting her movement for so much of the day.  Also the sleep book I'm reading says swaddling only at night helps differentiate between night sleep and naps.

For those that are swaddling, how long do you plan to keep doing it?

  • I think I read somewhere that they lose the flailing around at about three months, I suppose we will swaddle until then. Also, it really helps calm him down during his PURPLE crying at night. A swaddle, side-lie, gentle jiggling and some shushing can usually give me a not-screaming boy, so I will swaddle as long as we need to!
  • We only swaddle at night.  Naps I just let her go w/out and she still sleeps pretty well.  I'll prob continue swaddling at night for awhile since I think it helps her sleep for longer increments of time.

  • we swaddle throughout the day and at bedtime....ds seems to prefer it at night, whereas during the day it's sort of sporadic- i can tell sometimes he just wants to stretch and move those arms and legs.  we use the aden & anias blankets- love em b/c they're nice and stretchy...we have a miracle blanket, however, i'm returning it- just don't see the benefits that the website claims for the cost.

  • We only swaddle at night, and probably will for another month. We alternate between the swaddle me's, halo sleep sacks with swaddlers, and a onesie with a swaddle blanket. Their startle reflex is supposed to calm down by about 3 months which is what makes them flail their arms and hit/wake themselves up.
