Cincinnati Babies

For those with an older and younger child

So Princess has already started stealing toys from the baby (and my daycare baby) and I know she's pretty young to understand herself but how should I handle this?

FWIW: I've been telling her no and making her give the toy back to the baby. She can have it after they lose interest. Should I just continue?

  • That is exactly how we handle it. She has to return the toy and apologize. If she continues to take things from others she goes to time out in addition to returning the toy and apologizing.

  • Ditto Moesten.  I would just tell her that it isn't her turn yet and tell her to give it back.

  • OK, I just feel like she's doing it over and over again. I've been doing timeout with the third strike your out. :-) Thanks ladies!

  • I try to encourage trading between the kids I watch for childcare.  I tell my toddlers to trade a toy with a baby and then halp them pick up a near-by toy that is not being played with to hand to the baby.  Normally this makes the baby drop whatever he or she is playing with and take the other toy.

The toddlers also trade with each other a lot, but they also tell each other "no" when they don't want to trade.  I think that it is harder to teach them to communicate with each other over toys then it is when they are trading with the babies.

I try to only use time-outs for more serious situations, like when they hit each other or repeatedly climb on something they aren't supposed to.  I like to call it "taking a break".  :)  However, I could see how breaks could be needed for repeatedly taking toys from each other too.  Good luck!
