What would you do: Back to Work

So the plan was to head back to work on Monday, April 4th.  I would go back part time, working three full days a week (Monday - Wednesday). We are lucky enough to have a friend who has been running an in home daycare for years and she held a spot open for us shortly after announcing I was pregnant.  Not only is it someone we know that makes me more comfortable with the idea of leaving LO, but she also cut us a deal and will be charging us $105/week.

The thought of heading back to work makes me very uneasy.  DH has a wonderful job that (thank god) has allowed me to take 10 weeks of unpaid maternity leave but my income from working part time will help us have a cushion for spending and help to pay of what debt we have left.

Here is what I am now considering:

I work at a health club that has a child care on site, which employees are allowed to use up to 3 hours a day for free. After talking to DH about it last night, I am now considering working 3 hours/day, Monday - Friday and then working a few hours from home throughout the week. This option would allow me to be with LO every day and eliminate the $105/week cost of daycare.

Sticking with the original plan would give me 4 full days off with LO and give him some sort of social interaction with other kids.

If you had the choice what would you do?

Re: What would you do: Back to Work

  • If he is in childcare at work, doesn't he get interaction with other kids? I suppose it would be less consistent with it not being the same kids all the time though...This is a toughie though! I take DS to work with me, and I love it, so I think I am a bit biased.  I say work 3/5 and take him with you. It will also be good to have a consistent schedule. Taking LO with me has solidified his eating and napping schedule like clockwork without me even trying. If he can count on certain things at certain times, then he just continues on the weekend, which is amazing. Better for BFing too, if you are BFing (I think I remember you are?).

  • What is the cost of the additional hours for three 8 hour shifts at your work? For me, I'd prefer to have the full days off with DS, but it would depend on how much the daycare would be at your work to make the final decision. If it were considerably cheaper than your friends cost- I'd work three days and take LO to work daycare.
