Placenta Eating *Warning: Kind of graphic/gross*

So I was doing some research on the uterus and I stumbled across an article on mammals eating their placenta after childbirth...which led me to a few articles about humans eating their placentas. Like literally, freezing their placentas and cooking them up with their meals like its a side of beef or something! There were even some recipes posted!

Is it just me or is this extremely taboo? I'm not trying to judge anyone or anything but when I first read this I couldn't stomach the thought of this and was just wondering if anyone has heard of this before?Surprise

  • Oh and apparently people in china eat placenta, but in a dried up form!..Indifferent

  • LOL I totally agree! but apparently there are a lot of people on you tube that you can watch eating it and also there are people who have posted their experiences on eating this, online
  • yep. I know a lot of people who dehydrated and encapsulated their placentas.

It helps decrease postpartum bleeding, increase milk supply and reduce the risk of postpartum depression.

  • A friend of mine who recently had a homebirth had her placenta dried & put into pill form.  It is supposed to help with milk supply & exhaustion in the post partum period.

Apparantly it is becoming quite popular particularily where home births are concerned.  In fact, I hired a doula for my birth & on her preference sheet she asks if we would like to keep/take the placenta from the hospital!  Not sure I would go for it myself, but to each her own!

  • Many women swear by the positive effects on PPD by eating your encapsulated placenta.

I think if it works for you, eat it.

  • This is crazy talk right here!! LOL but in all seriousness I read the same things about the nutritional stuff regarding the placenta and the pill form does not sound like a bad idea!
  • From what I understand (3 of DH's immediate family members are L&D nurses), hospitals around here do not allow you to leave with the placenta. Something about biohazard rules or something.

  • I'm having my placenta encapsulated. I don't think it is gross at all, it makes sense to me when you look at all the benefits. Besides it is way more gross to swallow jizz but lots of women (and men) do that!

BAHAHAHAHA! Point taken! I don't think it would be gross having it encapsulated! But there are videos of people actually cooking up their placenta and eating it as if its filet mignon or meat loaf!

they have to allow you to take it if you want it. As long as you have something to store it in, they can not tell you no.

Legally they can't keep it from you, it is your property. You just have to sign a waiver saying they are not responsible for what you do with it.

I'm not sure I could cook and eat mine, only because I hate meat. But to each their own.

This made me laugh out load! My dogs looked at me like I am a nut! I could understand the pill form (although I would not do that) but not eating it in a stew or BBQing it up.. To me that sounds awful and a bit cannibalistic.

Yep.  I'm seriously considering it.  I can all but guarantee I could had you a capsule of placenta and a capsule of another herb and you wouldn't know the difference.

  • When I was about 6 years old, a neighbor's dog gave birth and all the neighborhood kids watched. It was pretty interesting and I saw the mother eat one of her pups and all the placenta. So it doesn't bother me too much.

  • I know someone who kept theirs in the freezer for a long time after giving birth (could still be there, for all I know) with the purpose of planting a tree and using it as fertilizer..? I always thought it was quite strange, and wouldn't want that in the same place I keep my food. Tongue Tied

  • From what my SO's ready, it's very nutrious and helps to replace what you've lost after giving birth.  We plan on planting a tree and using it there.
  • I have heard of this.  An aquaintance a long time ago was all about natural childbirth (& wound up having a TEN pound baby without any drugs) & I heard through the grapevine that she planned to save her placenta & cook it in a lasagna to eat.  I can't even think about it without wanting to hurl.  She is now pg with baby #4; I wonder if she's still doing it. Ick!
  • There was actually a lawsuit brought against a hospital in Nevada because the woman wanted her placenta and the hospital stated no. A judge ruled in her favor because technically it was her placenta, not property of the hospital. The woman hired someone to encapsulate it for her. From what I've read, there is no evidence that it actually has medicinal benefits, though women who have done it state they have felt a difference. Post partum depression affects millions of women. One possible cause of PPD is a withdrawal from hormones that are produced when you are pregnant. It is believed that since the placenta is the organ that produces hormones, eating the organ post partum helps prevent you from crashing from hormone withdrawal (PPD). It is thought that the placenta has hormones remaining in it post partum so by eating it or taking a pill a day helps substitute the hormones causing a gradual decrease, therefore preventing PPD.

Hope this helps. I find it fascinating!

  • I had dry heaves when I saw my dog do this after giving birth to her puppies lol. I know it is natural and NOT supposed to be disgusting, but even when animals do it I find myself grossed out. I cannot IMAGINE a human doing it, I didn't even know that was a possibility. I got grossed out in twilight when I read about him tearing the placenta open with his teeth -- guess it was based out of reality hahah.

That's an awesome idea! I don't think anyone in my house would go for it, but that is super cool to me. That would actually fit well with some of my spiritual practices...
