Cincinnati Babies

Hillsboro?

I'm new to this website, I usually go on babycenter.com but a friend recently told me about the bump.  I was wondering if anyone is from the hillsboro, ohio area?!  I live in metro detroit, MI right now and due to have our second baby april 4th and my husband is taking a job transfer to OH on april 18th.  I am freaking out about the timing, but more importantly, the area that we will be moving to.  Is anyone familiar with Hillsboro?  What do you think of it?  Is it a good area to raise kids?  He went house hunting this past week and actually like the Washington Court House area better but there is nothing there for housing that fits our budget and likes.  We found a great house in Hillsboro, but the area is the part we're questioning the most!  Please help if you have any words of advice!!!!  THank you so much!

  • Welcome! I'm not very familiar with Hillsboro, hopefully some one will respond who is.

  • I don't know too much about Hillsboro aside from it being a rural area (lots of farms; not close to much).  If my husband was being transferred to Hillsboro I would see if I could talk him into commuting (about 40-50 mins) from one of Cincinnati's outer suburbs, like Milford, just because I like being close to shopping/restaurants/entertainment.  But then again, I know more about the areas around Cincinnati than I do about Hillsboro.  You may also want to ask around on momslikeme.com   There is a Cincinnati board there too.  Good luck!
  • Welcome to our board! I used to have friends in Hillsboro 5-8 years ago and it's not a bad area, it's just very rural and country. The worst thing I remember is how closed minded people are around the area. Old school kind of. It's a small town type of place and everyone knows everyone. It's definately a haul from Cincinnati so it will make for long commutes to anything outside of the town. Like pp suggested, you could look somewhere on the north east side of Milford, maybe 1/2 way btwn Milford and Hillsboro and I think it would make things easier when it comes to shopping and groceries etc. Hillsboro is about an hour from Milford so you could find somewhere in the middle. Good luck with your search!

  • My dad works in Hillsboro, and I have been there quite a few times. There is decent grocery shopping (Kroger and Wal-mart, no Target unfortunately), quite a few restaurants, and think it even has a (small) movie theater. Yes, it is rural, especially compared to what you are used to, but I don't think you'll have to go far for basic things. My friend's husband teaches for the school district, let me see what I can find out for you. Good luck and welcome!

  • thank you!!!  He has an hour commute from work to home where we are at now, so the location was most important to us.  I told him, we could venture out to the bigger cities on weekends, and I'll just be home with my boys during the week so that doesn't bother me.  I just didn't know if it was a good area.  I knew country, but I just don't want to be in a "trashy" area.  So I was just checking to see what people thought in those terms, without offending anyone.  I'm very much a city girl and have everything within minutes of me where we live now, so it will definitely be a culture shock, but I'm trying to be the supportive wife!  Thanks again for all the feedback!
  • I personally would rather be shot in the head than live in Hillsboro, but that's probably because it's where my in-laws live. Tongue Tied

The town itself isn't too bad and they've had a lot of growth over the last few years. However, the community itself has had a lot of issues with closed mindedness, especially as it pertains to racism. I'm sure it doesn't help that the Aryan Nation has it's Ohio headquarters a few miles outside of Hillsboro.

Personally, I would be more inclined to check out Washington C.H. or Wilmington. Both are within 30 minutes of Hillsboro and both have easy highway access to Columbus or Cincinnati.

If you told me particular neighborhoods or street names that you are looking at in Hillsboro, I could tell you a little bit about those particular parts of town. Good luck! Also, I can recommend a really good bank if you're looking for one.

  • We live in Hillsboro! We moved here from the Eastgate area about a year and a half ago. My husband grew up here and most of his family still lives here. I grew up in a MUCH more rural small town area so Hillsboro isn't majorly "country" to me. Yes, farming is big and most people know each other. But like I said, my hometown is much smaller so I actually feel like this is a pretty big "small town".  I think the "close minded" comments that everyone is talking about really just means that Hillsboro is predominently conservative republicans. I really don't feel the racism issue that the pp was referring to.

As far as the area. You have your basic Walmart, Kroger, Kmart, dollar stores, movie theater, and a nice bowling alley. There is also a store called Peebles that is a smaller version of like a Kohls or JC Penneys. I've gone there a few times to get clothes or shoes/accessories if I don't have time to make a trip to Cincinnati. There are also plenty of restaurants and a very nice YMCA and park. We live right in town and it takes us about 45 minutes to get to both Eastgate and Milford. It's really not that bad of a drive.  We make quite a few trips back and forth. I liked my OB practice so much that when we moved I decided to still go there (located on Beechmont). We did the same with our pediatrician in Eastgate. So between doctors appts and shopping trips we drive from Hillsboro to Cincinnati quite frequently.

The only thing I'm not too thrilled about in Hillsboro is the school system. DH and I are both teachers outside of Hillsboro and don't consider Hillsboro to be a school we would send our children to. Our children will go to one of the schools DH and I teach at more than likely.

Some other places just to explore in case you decide against Hillsboro might be Wilmington, Goshen or Milford, Mt. Orab, Batavia. I wouldn't recommend Washington CH.

Hope all of that rambling helps. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions or want to know more.

  • My cousin lives there but I know Court House way more. I agree with a previous poster who said, I'd be leaning towards CH or Wilmington with CH being in the lead. Wilmington isn't far but is getting pretty run down itself as a major employer there laid off a bunch of people and it was the town's sole source of income. My SIL is from Court House and a few friends. You could also look in Jamestown (which also doesn't have much)....my dad lives there and it's also about 30 minutes from Hillsboro. There are some cute houses there for the prices. If you want to PM me ever, I'm fairly familiar with that area of town. I personally would never move to Hillsboro but that's just me. :-) Good luck, you're in for some big changes (not bad, just different).

My sentiments exactly!  I grew up in Milford, so that might make me prejudice... but it gives you easy access to all the major highways as well as plenty of shopping.  Its schools are excellent with distinction.  Goshen isn't bad, though way more small-town than Milford.  Its schools are alright, though excellent rated.

This is exactly why I suggested trying to be closer to Cincinnati, in a place like Milford (it is a straight shot from Milford to Hillsboro on route 50).  There are *so many* wonderful family things to do with young children if you are closer to Cincinnati...Kings Island, parks, the museum (which has an incredible childrens museum), the zoo, library storytimes, etc.  I would prefer to have my husband do all the commuting rather than having the kids do the commute on the weekends (that and I have no desire to live in Hillsboro either).  I would go nuts being at home with kids all week and no where to get except walmart (but that is just me).
