Yesterday, B woke up and vomited in the AM. He fell asleep on DH's chest yesterday morning and woke up 1.5 hours later. He got up for a little bit. Very whiny/clingy. He was up for about 2 hrs. He then fell asleep again on our bed, slept for a little over 2 hours. Remember, my son doesn't nap, so 3.5 hours of napping... 2 naps at that, during the day is something that NEVER happens.
By the time I got home from school at 3, he was starting to feel better. He was eating a little and relaxing on the couch. By the time it was bedtime, he was fine.
We got up this morning and went to speech. I would have cancelled if he wasn't fine last night, but he was fine.
He was fine all day today. He didn't drink as much as normal, but he was fine. About an hour ago, he started fussing big time. I just thought he was thirsty as his diaper was still pretty dry. Because he's hasn't peed a lot today, I gave him some G2 gatorade because I thought he might be a little dehydrated/ recovering from yesterday's stomach stuff. I left the room to turn the laundry over and found him on his tummy falling asleep on the couch. I took him up to bed. He felt warm so I took his temp. We have a temporal thermometer. One side read 99.5, the other side read 100.7. Because of the difference, I took it again. Then it read 101.9, 102.7. I took it again. 102.5/102.5. It climbed that much within a matter of minutes. He looked awful, and he was super lovey. Because of the temp, I had him lay down in his bed, plugged in his humidifier, and read him 2 Boynton books. By the time I finished the 2nd book, he was asleep.
Thoughts? He doesn't have the sniffles, he hasn't thrown up today, and he was acting normal until about an hour ago.
Re: Illness Question
Yeah. He was so unhappy... crying, clingy, lovey, warm, etc... I gave him a dose of pediacare (basically tylenol... it was just super cheap when I bought it). He's sleeping now. Breathing very heavy, but sleeping.
The alarming part for me was how quickly that fever skyrocketed along with how quickly he changed from happy and playful to feeling yucky.
I hope he is back to normal by morning. Sounds like he has one of the bugs going around the daycare centers. Can it please be Spring already? Just keep him hydrated with whatever you can get him to drink. Dose him with Tylenol or Motrin by the clock until he is up and moving and seems ok.
Did you get a rectal temp during the time that his fever was spiking? They definitely can spike very quickly, and you might have been checking during the midst of a spike. I am not a fan of temporal artery thermometers at all. We use them at work, and I think they are inconsistent and inaccurate. If you scan more than one time in a five minute period, you will get a higher reading because it picks up the heat from friction on the skin. This has always been my experience with them. They are great for giving you an idea of what the temp might be, but the only way to get an accurate reading is to do a rectal temp. I suspect that is what happened with so many different numbers in a matter of a few minutes.
Hope tomorrow is easier, and he is back to normal so you can enjoy what is left of your weekend.
I would say to take him to the pedi (or urgent care or at least put a call in) if he still has a fever tomorrow. Strep has been going around here like crazy.
C woke up thur with a slight fever, DH took her to the pedi and the strep test was negative, but she does have a virus. Her temp has gone up and down since then and she has been really whiney, clingy, lovey, and lethargic since then. I thought she would be better by today but she still has a slight temp. Yuck.
I think it's hard to tell with toddlers if they are really feeling bad or not, especially with the frequent mood swings and the fact that they can be laying on the couch one minute and jumping on it the next. Haha.
This has been the worst winter for colds. I really hope next winter is better.
Thanks for the insight. I've found it fairly accurate for what we need it for... this was even a difference from one side to the other, but it would explain the sudden jumping after the 3rd read. He definitely spiked a fever of some sort just based on what he looked like/felt like, but hopefully the sleep will do him some good. He's been asleep since 6:40ish, and I'm hoping he feels better in the AM. If I'm still concerned, I'll call the pedi line and go from there.
