Apnea monitor not covered by insurance?

I'm going to call on Monday but has anyone experienced this? I'm hoping it's a coding problem but the EOB says medical equipment rental and that the service listed isn't covered by the policy. We have a BCBS of Texas PPO.

Re: Apnea monitor not covered by insurance?

  • Ours hasn't been covered either.  We have Anthem BCBS in Indiana.  =(

  • Lame! Could you negotiate a discount for paying cash? Between the rental, supplies, and downloads we have racked up close to $1k in charges.

  • Yuck, sorry you have to worry about this.

Did the hospital not saying anything to you about your insurance possibly not covering it?  I know that the hospital had to call my insurance to check what company my insurance covered.  They also said that if there was a reason that the insurance would not cover them, we could always keep the babies in the NICU for further monioring if we preferred.  (weird that they would suggest that though, IMO)

I assumed it was covered since the care manager said that insurance approval would be one of the things done before we chould leave and she never came back and said it wasn't approved.  Our options were go home on the monitor or as you mentioned stay in the NICU so I don't know that our decision would have been any different if I had known.  But I don't understand why they wouldn't cover something that literally saved them thousands in additional NICU charges.

  • I'm not sure if you met your out of pocket but would it be covered at that time?  I'm not sure if ours was covered or not but we hit our out of pocket which just about anyone in the NICU will hit that....Or did they just throw it out and say it was a medical expense?  I think that is crazy, they would rather spend thousands of dollars to be in the NICU longer than cover a monitor.
