PB allergy - how fast?

Aiden got ahold of one of those PB Girl Scout cookies and took one little bite before it got taken away from him.  If an allergy were going to show up, how soon would it happen?  Do I have to watch him for hours?  All day?  This happened maybe 5 minutes ago and he's fie right now so if he is allergic I don't think it's severe but I just want to know how closely I need to watch him.

Re: PB allergy - how fast?

  • My friend's son has a peanut allergy and he bit a cracker with peanut butter on it and he swelled up instantly.

  • I had spread a bit of peanut butter on Natalie's cheek, and within seconds she broke out in hives, which is how I discovered her allergy.

  • Most severe allergies will flare up fast, but some do take their time showing symptoms. If you don't have any history of allergies in the family or known allergies, I really wouldn't worry too much.

  • 90% of severe allergies show up within seconds.  The rest take up to a half hour.  Look for hives, swelling, coughing, and bloody poop.

This.  DSs face/mouth were completely swollen 3 minutes after he ate PB.

  • our LO got a swollen lip from something but we're still not sure what it was from.  i hadn't given her anything new, except a larger amount of cheese then she has had before.  our pedi said it didn't matter if she had had it before, an allergy can show up at anytime.  awesome.  so now i'm scared to give her cheese because i've heard a second reaction can be much worse then the first.  anyway, just wanted to say....if your LO doesn't react this time i would still be cautious of next time he has PB, just in case.
