Preemies

Hoping to ease some minds..

Hey there, I was just lurking through the board, and my heart goes out to all of you preemie moms. I thought I could share my story with you to maybe ease some minds. I was born at 32 weeks, at 3 lbs, 12 oz and 15 in. I spent the first month of my life in the NICU, and my parents were told that they should expect many developmental and physical delays throughout my life. I also had early intervention for a few months. While I hit milestones (sitting, crawling, walking) later than full term babies, it was always within pretty normal range for my adjusted age. I never had issues with learning, other than a slight case of ADD and while my lungs were immature and there were questions regarding my brain, I am perfectly healthy in the physical sense. Considering I was born in 1990 and the technology wasn't quite as advanced as it is nowadays, I want all you ladies to know that even though the future is uncertain right now, your babies definitely have a chance of living perfectly normal lives. As a mother myself, I can't imagine the worry and heartache my mother and all of you have had to go through on a daily basis, and I applaud you for your strength and determination. I wish all of you and your little cuties the best of luck.

  • :) Makes me feel old too!

Thank you for posting your story.  I have thought a couple of times since this whole preemie adventure started that I have never looked at an adult and thought, "oh, they must have been a preemie."  Gives me hope that by the time our babies are adults, if they do struggle developmentally as children hopefully, in the long run all will be well?

    Thanks again!
