When did you introduce solids?

my 27 weekers are aa 4 1/2 months and I cannot hear enough about 'when are you going to start feeding them some real food?'  Everyone still wants to treat them like 7 month olds!  Even my pedi suggested starting solids at their 4 mo check up but I feel like we should go by adjusted age.  I am going by aa for everything except immunizations.  When did you introduce solids?

Re: When did you introduce solids?

  • We started at 6 months actual, but that would have been roughly 5 adjusted (we didn't do much adjusted since she was born at 35 weeks). DD was totally not ready for them and didn't really get into solids until some time around 13 months old but we kept trying and figured she would tell us when she was ready. I think you're right to wait, personally-- the science behind an infant's open gut is very convincing :)

  • 6 months adjusted even though he was showing all the signs of readiness they tell you to watch for at 3mos adjusted.  Just because he was ready didn't mean his little digestive system was - I'm glad we waited :-)
  • We were told to start (by the NICU follow-up dr) at 3 months adjusted, 6 actual.  It seemed a bit too soon so I don't know.  If they are only 4 1/2 months actual I think it is WAY too soon IMO.
  • I'm in the wait boat too. I had a 36 weeker and I still used adjusted age. And it was still too soon at 7 months (6 months adjusted). My two cents is that trying to feed a LO who is not ready is a huge waste of time and causes way more Mommy angst than necessary. (Of course my pedi would probably disagree but that's my opinion.) My DS didn't really eat until he was 13 months but that in no way hurt his growth or development because he loved BM (I EP'ed for 6 months) and then formula for the following 6 months. And now he is a fantastic eater so that delay basically meant nothing. I tell you all this because I spent sooooo many days freaking out about the fact he wouldn't eat in that whole 6-12 month time frame.

  • We started at 7 months actual, which was just over 4 months adjusted. He took to it very well. Pedi told us to wait until he was at least 4 months adjusted.
